You could have a defective screen - follow this to determine the fault.
Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.
Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
Check out www.lcdparts.net for parts, repair service and DIY info.
You entered in the cycle of internal/external monitor. Ok, laptops have three display modes:
1) Internal
2) External
3) Internal AND external simultaneously.
You can change modes by pressing Fn+F4 keys (you model may vary). Press the key combination, and wait 1-2 seconds, keep pressing the key combination until you reach you internal display mode.
boot problems
A200 series laptops are very good normally but don't boot up if there
is a device in the USB slot or a CD/DVD in the drive.
If it still
refuses to POST, remove the AC Adapter, remove the battery and remove
the hard drive.
Power the unit up without the hard drive and it
should complete POST and complain that there is no hard drive. If
that doesn't work remove AC adapter, ensure battery is disconnected
and remove hard drive and RAM. Try again. If it still doesn't work,
you have a mother board fault and it needs a service centre.
www.Toshiba.com will help you out.
If it does work at one of the
options, when you have closed the laptop down, replace the RAM first
and test, then the Hard Drive.
When working download updated BIOS from Toshiba.com
Hope this fixes your problem.

After the black screen happened I tried to connect external monitor and I could, at least I can get into the computer now.
the screen is black but the power is there my husband wiped the keyboard with a cloth while it was on and had the problem since. Havent got a Fn button so a bit baffled by the internal /external moniter thing???
Have you used an external monitor/projectorwith the laptop before the problem started?
