Camera read CF card, but cannot see on USB or other media

I have a 1GB Lexar Compact Flash card used with a Nikon D70. The card was formatted by the camera, and I have used it for a year. I can review the pictures fine on the camera. But when I plug the card into a card reader (I've tried 5 different ones) I get an error message that the card needs to be formatted. What caused this problem, and is there any way to recover the pictures I have on the card.

I get the message "The type of the file systems is RAW" Chkdsk is not available for RAW drives. When I just try to go to the g: drives, I get "The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure all required file system drives are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted."

Thanks for sharing any thoughts.

The camera is set for file type JPEG. Windows Explorer cannot even see the card or files. It comes up with the format needed error.

I just finished running Art Plus Digital Photo Recovery - a free download from the CNET site. It seems to have recovered my pictures, including some I erased last year. I will re-format the card in the camera and try some test shots. Thanks for your help

You can connect the camera to the computer via a USB cable and use the camera as the card reader. It will show up as a mass storage device. You should then be able to copy the images to your PC and format the card once recovered.

Hmmmm,

Try running check disk on the device whist it is connected to the PC

Manual steps to run Chkdsk at the command prompt (replace "volume" with the drive letter assigned to your memory card)
1. Click Start, and then Run.
2. In Open, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
3. Use one of the following procedures:
? To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, at the command prompt, type chkdsk, and then press ENTER.
? To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/f, and then press ENTER.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
? To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/r, and then press ENTER.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

If the report says no errors but you can not access the card still, you may be able to recover the images with a tool like Card Recovery http://www.cardrecovery.com/?rid=google&... Other similar products are available)

If all else fails you may have to bite the bullet on these images and format the card again. Once formatted, take a couple of test images and ensure you can read them off the card. If not, this would suggest that the memory card is faulty and should be replaced.

When replacing the card with a new one, ensure the camera's firmware is able to read the maximum capacity. For instance some Pentax iST models could only read up to 2GB memory cards. A firmware update will allow these to read beyond this limit.

If you getting messages about RAW file data and no files show up, it could be that you do not have a RAW plug-in for your image editing software.

For instance - I use a Pentax iST and Adobe CS2. To open raw images I had to download and install the Pentax RAW plug-in from their web site. However the RAW files did show up in Windows Explorer but as an unknown file type.

Look in the camera manual to find out how to save the images as JPEG file type (MENU - FILE TYPE - select NORM (JPEG Norm) - OK and then shoot a couple of test shots. Connect the camera to the PC again and see if those test shots show up. If they do, you know you most likely need a RAW data plug-in for your system.

The manual says:
NEF (Raw) / NEF + JPEG
NEF images can only be viewed using PictureProject or Nikon Capture 4 version 4.1 or later ( 191). When photographs taken at NEF + JPEG Basic are viewed on the camera, only the JPEG image will be displayed. When photographs taken at NEF + JPEG Basic are deleted, both NEF and JPEG images will be deleted.

This could be a good clue. NEF is Nikons own Nikon Electronic Image Format, and may explain why your system does not see them. Adobe Camera Raw plug-ins are installed to the following locations on your computer:-
Windows C:/Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS#/File Formats

There are multiple photo recovery programs out there that usually do a fairly good job of recovering images off of memory cards. I would search the internet for photo recovery programs and you should get multiple results with some being free and some at a charge. I would try the free ones first since just because one program doesn't work doesn't mean another program won't. I hope this helps!

The D70 uses CF (compact flash) cards - I hope you are simply misnaming the CF card. But, if you did use an SD card, it would explain how you could have bent a pin.

I understand that Nikon is moving away from CF cards because of the 'bent pin issue' as well as the limited capacity of the CF card.

So, first I would try a CF card (any size) in the reader. If it still doesn't work, then I think you might check with a camera repair shop. If it is a bent pin, they can fix or replace the card reader. Note that the D70 body can be replaced with an EX rated used body for under $90 at https://www.keh.com/shop/nikon-d70-6-1-megapixel-digital-slr-camera-body-only-9782.html

Thus, I wouldn't pay $100 to have the reader fixed unless there are extenuating circumstances. Good luck.

I just inserted a new 8GB memory card but it tells me ''OUT OF MEMORY'' I tried to format it but still gives me the same message. Why is that and what can I do about it please?

The memory card you are trying to use in the camera is not supported. This camera is an older technology that can not recognize the large 8 GB memory capacity of the card. In fact, the largest approved card your camera will recognize is 1 GB.

The list of approved memory cards was obtained from the Nikon Site directly, and pasted below for your convenience.

Nikon has tested the following cards and approved their use in the Coolpix 5700:

My NIKON D70 has trouble with flash cards larger than 2 G.

The D70 has known issues with certain cards / capacities. Nikon has identified the cards and capacities that are guaranteed to work with the D70 specifically, on their page dedicated to this info linked below:

It seems that only Lexar and Microdrive cards that are 4Gb are supported (some with significant limitations) and no card greater than 4Gb is supported at all, regardless of manufacturer.

CHA appears in window and camera will not work at all

The very first thing which you should try is another CF card. Preferably a brand new one (not Lexar 80x, see below), but if not then use one which has been freshly reformatted in another Nikon DSLR.

ziggy53 on the Digital Grin forum posted an answer to this question two years ago. As I cannot put it any more clearly or succinctly his posting is reproduced as follows:-

"It appears that a Nikon D70/D70s CHA error is a general "cannot writeto card" error and can be caused by many different situations including:

1) CF card fault/failure
2) CF card fragmentation
3) CF connection, camera contacts
4) Camera internal failure with card write circuit board
5) Power supply in camera, potentially also related to the battery.

To rule out the Compact Flash card(s) as the fault, try a brand newcard (not Lexar 80x, as those seem problematic), format in camera anddo not field erase images. Reformat card in camera to start over. Ifthis procedure works, format the older cards in the camera and thenwork the cards by taking images, preferably RAW to fill up the card asquickly as possible. Do not completely fill the card but stop at around10 remaining images and format the card in camera once more. You mightbe good to go.

If these procedures don't work, it is recommended to return the camerato Nikon for a checkup. If Nikon cannot diagnose a problem, you mighttry a new battery as some claim a weak battery to be part of theproblem, but I don't see that "cure" mentioned often enough to know ifreally is a cure or not.

Repairs for an out-of-warranty repair for the problem relating to thecamera seem to run around $300USD from those few folks who reported acost."

I've experienced this problem on a few D70 and D70s models and the advice ziggy53 gives has proven to be right on the mark; to Nikon's credit I've also found that in every case where I've definitely eliminated the possibility of a CF card failure they have attempted out of warranty repairs on a goodwill basis: all I had to pay for was for tracked and insured shipping to Nikon and they paid to return them. Of the five or six cameras which I've sent back so far only one had the problem re-emerge albeit in a less serious and very infrequent form. By then I'd given the camera to my niece and she's decided the fault is not serious enough to warrant sending it back again.

I have a Nikon D70. Camera doesn't read CF.

Sometimes pins inside take strain. Read up on how to replace the CF pin unit. Not too difficult as long as you don't force anything and remember to retrieve the little metal strip....
