I changed the batteries for the first time, and now when I turn it on it gives the "Err" overload error, although there is nothing on the scale when I turn it on or when the error message is shown.

How to calibrate when "out2" is shown. With the power off andthe scale on a stable surface, hold "g" and press "on". Some number will show up, probably a negative number. Press the "on" button again and the scale should display "Zero". Wait until it says "200.0". Gently place a 200 gram weight on the scale and wait a few seconds. If your successful it will say "Pass" and your scale will work again, yay!
Try to reset the unit. Use the following steps - Open the battery compartment on the bottom of the scale. Push the tab on the door and lift the cover. - Remove the battery from the compartment. Close the battery compartment door. - Sit the scale right side up on a hard surface floor. - Step on the scale and stand still on it for five to ten seconds. Step off the scale. - Turn the scale over and open the battery compartment. Re-insert the battery. Close the battery compartment cover. - Place the scale right side up on the hard surface floor. - Press one foot on the scale until the display shows zeroes or dashes. Remove your foot. - Wait for the scale to shut off by itself. When you step back onto the scale, it will be reset. Hope this solution has been helpful?
Here are the basic ERR messages and their meanings:
Error 0: Initialization
Error 1: Instability (scale is on an uneven surface ex: carpet)
Error 2: Unit may have been jarred or unit was overloaded (customer went over the maximum weight capacity)
Error 3: Contact error (Feet were not wet for Body fat reading, feet aren’t big enough to reach sensors)
Error 4: Body fat is out of range
Error 5: Water is out of range
I got an ERR2 message and now the scale doesn’t work. What should I do?
The following reset procedure is used when the scale shows an err2, err, 0.0, inaccurate weight, or some other unusual error.
Remove the battery from the scale.
Sit the scale on a hard surface floor.
Step up onto the scale, stand still for about 5 seconds and step off the scale.
Re-install your battery.
Place the scale back on a hard surface floor.
With one foot only, place just enough weight on the scale for the display shows zero’s or dashes. Once you see zeros or dashes remove your foot.
Wait for the scale to turn off again.
Step up onto the scale for a weight.
If the reset is successful, you should receive a weight right away. If you continue to receive one of the error messages above please call our Customer Service department or contact us via email. You can also try the reset procedure a 2nd time. Sometimes the reset procedure will work the second time.

This is a reply I received from Taylor customer support. I have followed this procedure enough times to wear out the original battery and still get the Err 1 message. You may have better luck.
Thank you for your e-mail. The reboot below may clear the error from your scale. You may need to do this several times to completely reboot the system. Please let us know if you have any questions or continue to display the Error.
1. Remove the battery from the scale 2. Set the scale on the floor without the battery in place. 3. Stand on the scale for 10 seconds (still without the battery) 4. Carefully replace the battery without turning the scale on. 5. Using only one foot, tap the scale or apply just enough pressure to turn on the display. (It should show dashes or zero's) IMMEDIATELY REMOVE YOUR FOOT. 6. Let the scale turn off 7. Step on the scale for a weight reading
