Just bought a Harman Kardon AVR 1510 and the speakers aren't getting a sound. everything is connected properly but the device won't let us select the surround mode on the on screen display. it keeps blinking "TV SPEAKER MODE". how do i turn the tv speaker mode off

Check the fuses - there may be one inside the box as well. May also be a bad transformer. You can get a multi-meter at Home Depot and lookup how to check the power at the transformer.

It will only display via component. Your HDMI firmware is either 1.1 or 1.2 and has HDCP issues (High Definition Copyright Protection) it's a firmware problem that has been fixed on all new receivers, not just a HK issue, all receivers! the new version 1.3a and 1.3b have fixed the issue. Unfortunately you cannot update the firmware on the receiver. Hope this explains it for you, sorry! Lot's of angry people out there!!! myself included.

Yes, although it (AVR) does not support HDMI only component video.

Connect the audio to the receiver and the video directly to the TV if you have inadequate video inputs, or want to take advantage of the HDMI.

This is a good indication that the surround processing section has a problem. This can be anything from a supply voltage being missing to a defective processing IC. Without testing inside the unit, it wil be difficult to determine. With surround procesing turned off, the entire section is bypassed. This is why standard stereo mode sounds OK. The static sound is digital noise and can be poor processing or a bad D/A converter IC.
