Having installed a New EVERMOR Smart GPS receiver I cannot now get the SILVA S15 VHF to recognise the signal or display position. The output from the GPS is well within the NMEA0183 and RS232 parameters and the Silva S15 paper work suggest that there is/was a known potential problem when connecting a new GPS. My Raymarine C80 is able to see the signal via a multiplexer and I have tried connecting the radio via the same but no joy. Also tried direct connection on it's own also no joy. SILVA have given me a routine to reset the radio but that has not solved the problem.

SOURCE: Navman VHF 7100 Radio neither receiving nor transmitting

I would suggest checking your antenna/coax connector. I am not sure what kind of antenna or ,mount you are using but I would suspect it being something in the antenna. Most radios are designed to not transmit if the antenna is broke or not connected at all. When you say bent do you mean metal bent or bent at the base? So that would be where I start. Can you try a different antenna? Hope you track it down. N5ARK

I lose satellite connection every time I turn on my GPS unit. After few minutes connection will be restore by itself. Why this happing and what can I do to fix it. Frank

If you shut the unit down - and remove it from the power cord in your car, this is expected.

When powered down, the unit is not capable of maintaining contact with the satellites in the sky. When you power it up, it needs to receive signals from 3 or more satellites get a "fix" or calculate your position in the world. The more signals received, the the more accurately displayed your position will be. The device must use the signal data, perform calculations and bring up a map of your area.

The "Lost Satellite Reception" message also occurs whenever the GPS does not have a clear view of the sky over the earth's equator. This can be from a garage roof to heavy foliage (tree cover) - and even when driving between tall buildings. Usually, it shouldn't take more than a minute or so (once the obstructions have been cleared) for the GPS to reacquire the signals, calculate and display your new position.

I hope this helps!

Hope this helps and good luck!

I have bought a ICOM VHF m601 and I want to connect the furuno gps 31 to the VHF. Is this possible ?

Using the nmea output from your GP-31 to the nmea input on the VHF. Enable the GLL Sentence and make sure the port is set for nmea0183. Remember hooking nmea up it's positive to positive and neg to neg. Once that is done and you have a fix you should have lat and long on your vhf.
