Problem with Onkyo HT-SR700

I bought the Onkyo HT-SR700 system and I have connected Cyberhome (DVD) with the same and the TV. When I am using the HT, the sound is not coming as I expected. I can hardly hear the surround effect and the back speaker has very low volume. Please suggest as to how should I configure the system to blow the head apart from its sound.

I have a Coaxial cable attached from DVD player to the receiver on the ports that are specific to coaxial cables only. That is one. The second connection is thru a normal Yellow colored port for video input output from DVD to teh receiver. These are the only two connections from DVD to receiver. The last connection is from receiver to TV for video.

Also, suggest me the best mode of playing and the speakers volume settings etc. to get the most out of the system.

    Thanks in advance!

Can you explain how you have the DVD player connected to the reciever and what the label on the jacks read on each.

OK. The coax on the back of the reciever is not for video, it is to plug in an FM antenna if needed. If it were me (and this is how my home theater system is set up)I would not use the reciever for any video at all. My opinion is that it adds too many links in the chain. I would use it for audio only. Really the only reason it would be needed is if you had multiple sources of video and not enough inputs on you TV.
-On the back of the reciever on the left, you should see an RCA style input marked Coaxial, in the Digil In box. That is to be plugged into the DVD player audio labled with a similar label. The reason for connecting it this way is because it is a data connection, which means they actually communicate with each other. A DVD is encoded with information and the DVD player will give that information to the reciever which tells if how it should set itself up for perfect playback. In other words, it's totally automatic, and it's the best possible sound! Super easy.
-For the video, it totally depends what kind of TV you have as there are many ways to configure the video. If you are using a tube TV, you will probably want to use a coax between the two. If you have a high definition tv or some projection sceen, you will likeky have a component video input. That is the best to use if it is available because that is the one that sends true high definition video.
To play a DVD, you will have to use the reciever for audio and set your TV to whater input you decide to use.

Crutchfield.com has some cool DIY pages to help you understand all this stuff a little better.

Good luck and don't forget to leave feedback!

Dvd connection

Yes! You can pass the video signal through the receiver. This is most useful when you have more than one video device (e.g. DVD, cable box, VCR,...), and you can use the receiver to switch to the audio and video for the selected source at the same time.

On the back of your Onkyo HT-SR800 there is a section labeled "Component Video." It has three inputs and one output. So, attach your DVD by component cables to the "DVD In" and then attach component cables from the "OUT" receiver connection to the TV.

If your TV doesn't have a component connection, then this addresses your other question. You can't gain anything with this, because your TV doesn't support it. Connect the DVD to the TV according to the highest quality connection that they both support, in this order: composite, S-Video, component.

If you are using composite, but they both handle composite, than yes, you will get a better picture by going to component (or even S-Video). If both devices support progressive scan, this could be a substantial difference.

Your receiver accepts component, s-video and component video, but keep in mind, it may not do "video switching." So if you connect the DVD in via component, but go out to the TV over composite, then you may not get any video at all (but feel free to try). Try to avoid this, but you may be forced to try depending on the limitations of the various devices that you are hooking up.

Onkyo HT-SR750

Check out Onkyo's website: The HT-SR 800 description says "a separate audio connection is necessary" Maybe it is true for the --750 too.
