I have a Miele G646SC Plus dishwasher and the Drainage / inlet warning light has just come one. There is a small amount of water that will not drain away from the bottom of the dishwater. I have removed the filter at the bottom of the unit but cannot see any blockage there. Can you help? Thanks, Craig
I had the same problem a few days ago. I followed the instructions to clean the filter and check to see that the impeller was free to rotate in both directions. The problem persisted. After reading this thread, and a similar one on another site, I tried what mikeboerma suggested in "solution #3", and bingo, problem solved. The magic combination is to push and hold the on/off button and the start/stop button.
I think water had got in the bottom tray when I moved the machine. Having got it all out by tilting forwards it only reset after I did the push and hold both on and start buttons , that resulted in the red light coming on immediately,I turned it off and next time it ran properly with no hassle.
I have the G646 SCplus and recently the problem has occurred about a month ago and again just now.

with power on with power off with door open with door closed and it did not reset.
I tried joggling the machine to see if it would help the float ball valve thing.
By the way the symptom is the humming with or without starting the wash programme. Followed by the red flashing light 5 times thing. Then solid red light on the inlet.
The drainage pump is working fine as I had tipped a couple of gallons of water down it and it happily removed the water. So it seems to be the inlet again.
Last time a month ago I pulled it out and took off the inlet hose with the flood sensor. Checked the filter all was ok. Put it back on and it worked fine ie it started again no red lights.
I have read elsewhere that the inlet pipe needs fitting vertically not horizontally. Mine is fitted a couple of feet off the floor but fitted horizontally. My next step is to get it fitted vertically. The flood sensor inlet hose is apparently sensitive.
Anyway this time - I had pulled the machine out by about a foot with the outlet hose disconnected and I then tried to start the wash cycle and it worked fine, ie water started to fill the machine.
It would have been happier had the magic combination to push and hold the on/off button and the start/stop button worked.
On further reading of this thread it seems that someone else further down is saying it should be fitted horizontally and not vertically.

So on page 38 of the G 646 SC Plus installation manual 05565043 it clearly shows the inlet pipe and sensor fitted vertically........................

I know the answer ! And am very angry at a miele guy who came round for this same problem an year ago. Cost me over € 100,- or something. He fixed it then. But could ( or wouldn't) tell me what he did. He makes a living out of this. Sure he knows it. As a matter of fact, he didn't do anything worth mentioning.
Anyway. First offcourse clean the propellor. (see above) But then the software is still confused. And the light of the inlett/oulet keeps blinking red. So what I did was push two buttons at the same time. I can't recall which ones I pushed. So try different options. Let us know what the right combination is. But as a wonder the red light went out. It is working again.
So it has nothing to do with problems concerning waterflow. It is a software thing.
Thanks Mike have just cleaned propeller and re-booted machine by holding the 2 buttons which were start solo and start /stop, so far sounds good.

I have a Miele G692 SCI Plus which had a similar problem a while ago.
The inlet/drain light also comes on when there is water in the base
pan. There is a float switch that also triggers this and over time if water
has collected in the base pan the float switch can stick. Pull out the
dishwasher and tilt it towards to back. If there is any water in the
base pan it will come out. To be thorough, put the machine on it's back
and remove the base pan (4 screws by the feet), the float switch is a
circular plastic casing with a polystyrene float in it. It comes apart
for servicing, the float can jam if there is any rubbish in the water.

Emptied the water out and it works. I'll run some dishwasher cleaner through it and if it happens again I'll remove the base pan.

Thanks Ian, this seems to have fixed my drain light problem. I had tried all the above things, clearing the pipes, impeller, reset it all etc. Nothing worked, until I tried your solution, tipped the machine back and drained out the water, seems to be fine now!! Great solution.
When Miele Customer Service told me my 2010 dishwasher was no longer on warranty, and that the repairman costs 200$ minimum just to come and say hello, I decided to enquire about the problem on the internet. Quickly found your advice, checked the plastic casing with a polystyrene float in it, and solved the problem!! Thanks a million!!(YL, from Montreal)

THANKYOU ianb1960 - i tried everything else on my Miele G962 (cleaning internals as per manual, undoing pipes and checking for blockages, reset button combinations), but it didn't work - until I tilted it around 45 degrees, balanced it carefully and let the water drain out the back! Money saved going towards a family gift basket. Just kidding, going towards car parts.
ianb1960 - and all who suggested tilting the machine back. After cleaning the pipes and refitting, tried the re-set of pressing on/start buttons at the same time. Tilting the machine back produced some clear water. Now machine is running happily - one less stress so thanks to all of you, you're appreciated more than you'll know.
My machine is now 15 years old and I was convinced it had gone for a burton this time, but following these instructions has given it a new lease of life - like everyone else, drained the water out and off we went. Thanks ianb1960!

You can remove the sump filters and get to the pump impeller.
Bail out all the water, remove all the sump filters. You will see a wire clip in the sump, flick over the clip ( i think it's to the right) and grab the impeller cover and pull it upwards. There you will expose the pump impeller. Make sure there is no debris in there and the impeller turns freely. Stilk same problem, then make sure the main circulation motor runs. This you willl hear when the machine starts to fill. This is after the drain cycle. All Miele dishwashers drain first as soon as you press the start button in a wash programme.
Mine was a small chicken bone stuck in this impeller. Thanks for instructions very helpful machine is now fine. The clip goes to the left by the way :-)
Did the above but also Held the Power on Button and Start button together for 10 seconds which seemed to reset the error code and the Red Intake/Drain light cleared. Just running the machine on full wash cycle to make sure. I may need to check that the outlet pipe has no blockage anywhere along that as well just to be sure.

I have Meile G892 sc with intake/drain light flash, followed instruction to clean up. still not working. I checked on line today to find out you have to reset it. So I turned on firsst and pressed Start/Stop button for 10 second. it works.
It could be a clogged in the drain line. Often the problem is at the point where the drain line attaches to the garbage disposer or household drain line. You should remove this line and clear it form any debris in the hose or the hose connection. Be sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher again. Good luck!
I checked the drain line first and ran a cycle with the drain line going into a bucket and it was just fine, but when I reconnected it, the drain/Inlet light came on again. After reading this post I pulled it apart again. The clog was right at the disposal. It was full of some sort of hard bean that prevented the drain from emptying into the disposal. Problem solved.

I had a Miele G646SC Plus With inlet / drain light coming on and no water coming into unit. All the above solutions tried. As with solution #6 removed the undertray to check the water leak protection float and microswitch. No water in pan,but found polystyrene float had distorted and activated the switch.I removed the float and sandpapered it flat.Switch function now operates and dishwasher is working fine. Hope this will be of help to someone
This is actually for a Miele g858 incognito, but the problem sounds exactly the same. It stared out with a simple small leak on the bottom door seal. i ordered a new one but when it arrived from Miele [2 days] the dishwasher was giving me the drain/intake flash. in my case 4 short flashed an on long flash. i went into diagnostic mode and found the fault code to be #6 which is not enough counts on intake sensor. So i cleaned th intake filter and all of the other filters but no luck. one thing i noticed was that when i closed the door with no program selected the drain motor just ran. This combined with solution "#7 water in the drain pan" made me go down this path. the service manual says that if the drain pan float is in the up position then power is routed to the drain pump when the door is closed. This would explain why the drain pump would run even when no program was selected. sure enough pulled it out and the drain pan was full of water. cleaned the pan and the float. everything i good to go now except that the bottom door seal the Miele sent has a **** ever 6" or so and it leaks. i will have to call them Monday and talk to them about it.
on the incognito series you clear the fault codes by turning off the dishwasher then pressing and holding down buttons 1&2 while turning on the dishwasher. press button 6 twice. flashing button 6 indicates deleted fault codes.

I read elsewhere it should be vertical, not horizontal. The manual for fitting the g646 sc plus page 38 shows it as vertical. Though I am not a plumber and my inlet light comes on with the pipe fitted horizontally. Just saying.

I'm not too sure if this is chicken or egg but I did try to "double button hold" suggested above & didn't get any indication to suggest that a system had reset. So I just turned the rotating dial to the "Stop" position & got a green light!
The fact that I only got that after cleanning the filter & trying the button solution makes it a bit difficult to know what actually fixed the problem!
Turn power off and count to 10.
Hold down Top Solo and start/stop button and push power back on.
You can select all programs now by multiple presses of the start/stop button.
Clean impeller on pump then I found filling up the machine with water for a while then a long drain cleaned everything without stripping out pipes.
Hi everyone, I had this problem with my G646 SC over the weekend.
I tried cleaning the drain filter, freeing up the circulation impeller, and doing the reset with the control buttons.
The machine was draining OK, (drains first when you start the programme) and filling with water.
Then I found a thread online suggesting clean the inlet filter, at the end of the inlet hose where it attaches to the water supply. I didn't even know there was one!
There was grit or sand in there, not much but obviously enough to stop the machine filling with the required amount of water to start the programme.
The machine is back to working order. By the way, it's around 19 years old
So it's worth trying this before taking panels off and looking for other solutions.

between drain light comes on at end of any program, checked al the usual
kinks in drain pipe / filters/ free movement of impeller/polystyrene float etc
when I put the machine on its side a small amount of water runs out from somewhere? and after standing back any further program completes fully, but here's the problem every time on the second program run the between drain light comes on again????
regarding the button pushing I have a problem I bought this unit from a friend who brought it to Australia from France the lettering on the buttons is in French and no sequence of button pushing has worked ?

Thanks to all the solutions above, I have 962 , it stopped working properly and kept sticking half way through the program. I thought it was the controller at first as I had needed to change that on a previous dishwasher. I cleaned everything I could, took the front off to check for faults but it all looked good. Checked all pipes. The fault continued. I was about to give up and call an expert when I spotted the post about the polystyrene "float" underneath the machine. I took the 4 screws off to reveal the inerds of the mchine. The so called float is a piece of polystyrene in a plastic casing which is not within the sump of the machine but sits beneath it. I inspected it and it seemed fine so put it all back together, put the base plate back on and tried the machine again. It works!!!! Not sure what I did but it works!!! Thanks all.
I tried all these things and still no joy - so I plugged my dishwasher onto my shower water pump and bingo! The problem was not enough water pressure from mains water source!
I was suffering the dreaded inlet light coming on. Checked out everything but no solution till I came on here. I removed the bottom panel and cleaned off some unsavoury thickish water deposit from base and I cleaned float. I reconnected machine and held onto the start and on/off buttons till all 3 red lights suddenly came on steady and (I assume) the software re-set. I then turned off and turned machine back on and it is again a very happy machine! (As indeed I am) My machine is a G646SC+ Together we have just performed a pre-wash and we both gleaming lol
I had this problem, and cleaned the inlet and outlet filters, made sure the pump impeller spun freely, and tried all combinations of button presses. Resolved to try to make sure the outlet pipe was clear, I pulled the machine out from its 'semi-fitted' position, and found that a kink had developed in the outlet pipe restricting flow (it had been ok for the last five years!). Having straightened out and re-routed the pipe, the drain/inlet light now stays out, and the dishwasher works perfectly again!
I think that the pump impeller is jammed or clogged.
Yay --- its working -- same inlet/drain problem, would set the programme - it would start up - water would start coming in and then click - 'inlet/drain' light on and zilch action. Clean out pump thingy - nothing wrong with it, and I so begrudge those Miele call out and spare part fee's. After reading what you guys have said, I just turned it off - back to zero so to speak, pressed the 'Start button' and the On/Off at the same time, simultaneously - together and all that stuff, three times - and then the machine started, I waited for it to stop and for the red light to come on -- but it didn't -- software schmoftware - we got it cracked you guys are great!.

After pushing the silver button inside the lower chamber, I realised that it wasn\'t a button at all. At this point there was no way to get it back via messing around in the junk in the deep, although I did try. It had a seal around the area it had dropped into, his lead me to believe it was a plug.
Searching google, I found your solutions and flipped the ol\' G645 on it\'s back after detaching the water inlet (turn the water supply off by moving the handle to the horizontal position) and the drainage outlet. At this point there was plenty of drainage water leaking over the kitchen floor, so I procured some towels, a mop and some plastic bags, allowing me to continue with the second phase of the break and repair scenario.
I called for a member of the family to help to place the machine on its front, ensuring to remove the knob that sticks out and placing a drill box as a landing pad for the unit\'s bland but functional fascia.
Unscrewed the four screws on the bottom of the machine using an impact driver, the metal case fell to ground, revealing the innards of the clockwork marvel.
Then... I saw it, right away, we already knew it wasn\'t a button, and now I could also see in it\'s design, plugging wasn\'t it\'s primary function. I nearly fainted...

this guy speaks the truth. i too looked at the silver cylinder in the bottom of the white plastic drain and thought...hmm, i wonder what happens if i poke it. and sure enough, if you poke it, it dissapears into the bottom metal sump. weirdly though the machine still ran with it in the sump and didnt leak, which frankly i dont understand, but hey, im not complaining. its only when i tried the push the buttons for 10 second trick to clear the inlet/outlet light (which was coming on AFTER it had completed the wash and drained, but before the fan cycle so everything was left wet) did i have a problem. once i had done the push both buttons for 10 seconds the machine didnt do anything at all when told to wash except sit there and hum. so in trying to fix it i had made it worse. however, a quick removal of the metal sump (4 screws) and put the sensor back in, and it works again. thaks for all your help. its a meile 646sc

I have the same problem. Drain line is clear. If I hold the start button for a few seconds, I can start the system again. It drains, starts to rinse, then the light comes on again. When I open it, there is the small amount of water in the bottom.
. I checked out the impeller there are no debris in there and the impeller turns freely. and the main circulation motor runs fine.so i guess i need to remove the drain pipe at the kitchen sink to see if there are debris in the line ,
how would i go from the kitchen sink end to the dishwasher end of the pipe , snake ? help please
I have the same problem have checked the inlet pipe and cleaned the filter and made sure drainage pipe clear and cleaned the bit inside with a ball bearing thing so as far as i am concerned the inlet/drain are ok but the dishwasher seems to still think they are not and is making a whirring noise when I turn it on even if I haven't selected a programme. Seems to me that it needs to be reprogrammed, any suggestions?
Inlet valve has gone red on our dishwasher after the drying vent started leaking and we flushed it out with water. The Miele centre said the dishwasher may think there's a leak. We've had this problem so many times and have spent £100s in repairs over the past few years. Seems to be a software problem. Any help to how we can fix this without spending £150 greatly appreciated!
You have a leak in your machine... possibly in one of the hoses that lead in or out of the pump. There is a “trough” under the machine and when it fills with water it pushes a smallish float up into a switch that stops the water coming into the dishwasher. It still makes a noise and the drain light comes on in the front of the machine. If you pull the machine out and empty the water by tipping it backwards or sideways it will start, but that won’t fix the problem. The trough will fill again and push the switch off. If there is water in this trough it means you have a leak. We waited three weeks before getting a technician out and the water evaporated, they run the thing on the quickest cycle and it was leaking through a “pinprick” hole in the larger of the rubber hoses (about an inch long) and so it didn’t fill until we put it on another setting and then it all happened again. The boys from Mieli found the leak after their third (fifth overall) visit and fixed it.
