I have a Generac MC 5500 portable generator. It

I have a Generac MC 5500 portable generator. It was used 12-15 times last year with no problems and then one day when it was being used the power shut down. It ran fine with one item running (7amps). When another item (6.8 amps) was turned on the power shut off. I reset the reset switch and it worked fine until a second item was plugged in and turned on again. It never did this before with the same two items being used every time the generator has been run. What could the problem be?

When power tools get old they draw more amperage. 6.8 amps new might be 8 amps. over loading when older.

What kind of oil do you use

Judy, Generac portable generator oil recommendations. Above 40°F, use SAE 30. Below 40°F and down to 10°F, use 10W-30. Below 10°F, use synthetic 5W-30. Oil should be changed after the first 8 hours of operation and every 200 hours of run time thereafter.

I have a 16kW Generac Guardian Generator with a 200 amp house service RTS panel (installed 2007). Last night the power went out and the generator started but the unit did not switch to use generator

The problem with the repair service is another matter. Emergency generator and it's switch gear are there for emergency purposes. It has to be exercised periodically. The switch gear should have a toggle switch to simulate a power outage. the switch cuts power to the sensor sensing power from the utility company. This tells the switch gear that power was lost, start the engine and switch over to generator power. Run for a period where engine reached running temperature and switch back to stand by to shut down. Do this periodically, and be grateful the event was not a disaster. Think of your back up electrical system as the spare tire of your car and similar equipment and enjoy your investment. Good people brings you happiness, bad people brings you experience !.

Generac troubleshooting

Check that there is not a switch to activate the panel. Next, there is a fuse for the outlet panel as well or a circuit breaker. Check that. If all of that is good you will have to put a meter on all of the wiring points from beginning to end and find out where the voltage stops. Then you have found the component that went bad.

Will not start GENERAC 5500 PORTABLE GENERATOR

First you need to identify, is there a spark at the plugs? Is there fuel getting the cylinders, it can be so many things until you define at least that, the solutions are too many to list
