Howdy Ivy:
An Adobe PDF format service manual for the Technics SL-23 turntable can be downloaded from
http://www.servicemanuals.net/
for about $16.
Good luck!

Parts are discontinued for these models. You need what's called a P-Mount cartridge screw. Try the following company:

SOURCE: What cartridge do I buy for this turntable
You should get a headshell first of all. Into the headshell you install the cartridge. I would get a Technics headshell just because it is of the same brand, and I use a SHURE M35X cartridge which is mean for dance or electro music. The headshell is your option but the cartridge should be matched up to what type of music you will be playing. Good Luck
SOURCE: i PURCHASED A LIKE NEW TECHNICS SL BD27 TURNTABLE.
Yes you need a pre amp
It would also be the same if you connected it to a computer to record an LP to CD. Mine is a little different and has one already built in that I can switch in and out of line.
Try spend a little more if you can as many pre amps can introduce noise.
You may also want to check that the turntable is properly grounded to prevent noise too
