Vacuumed up an apron string and turned off the vacuum as it started to smoke--rubber I think. Took off the bottom four screws and checked -- one thin belt OK, 1 large belt on a large roller behind the brush--but just hanging there...wish I had an exploded view of what it should look like correctly put together--does that large belt need to go back around another wheel or around that metal post that sticks out behind the roller brush?

Yes, one end goes around the large wheel and the other end goes around the metal post. If the rubber band isn't set around the metal post correctly, it can slide off - and if it doesn't slide off completely it'll continue to turn and burn rubber as it's rotating off the big wheel. It can ruin the band obviously, but they're fairly inexpensive to replace.

Hoover vacuum started smoking

Sounds like the roller became stuck and the motor burnt the belt into. I worked on Hovers for years and that is the most common problem.

That means that the belt is stretched and it is slipping on the motor shaft, that is why it is hot and smells like burning rubber. You need to replace the belt. Here is the correct belt you need:

Hoover canister vacuum (windtunnel)- turned it on and it had good suction, then smoke came out and it smells like something is burning. Is it the motor burning up or something else?

Hoover WIndtunner 7600 no suction

According to the manual on your machine, you can either have a broken belt, or the switches to the self-propel switch, and brush switch are in the off position. I have included a link to your manual. Please look at pages 13-14 under troubleshooting.

Hoover Windtunnel Bagless bolt fell off

With this self propell series, the entire bottom needs to come apart to re-install the nut. if it is one month old I would highly recommend taking it in for warranty service. What plastic is melted?

Self propel not working, burning smell

Flip the vacuum cleaner over and check the roller brush. Is it full of string and hair? If so, unscrew the four phillips-head screws holding the plate on that covers the roller brush; pull out the brush, and cut off/clean off all the hair and string. Replace everything and try running the vacuum. Alternate solution: perhaps the belt that makes the brush go around is broken. If so, follow the above steps to remove the roller brush, then replace the belt.
