A Dood Posted on Sep 12, 2013

The sound is only coming through one of the earpieces, usually the right one. When I move the headphone cable connecting to my laptop to the left or right, it switches to that headpiece. I don't know why it's not coming through both, and it was working fine 5 mins ago.

It sounds like a short in either the wire or the connection to the computer. 90% of the time this is caused by the cable getting pinched somehow, or just getting old. You'll need a new wire, so probably new headphones altogether.

SOURCE: Shure E4C headphone failure

I just found out how to open the E4's.

What you do is, unscrew the metal cap that holds the angled earbud tube in place. Note that the tube itself can't be turned.

Then remove the metal ring behind it as well as the small rubber ring.

There is a 'hinge' at the cord end of the earbud, so what you should do is take a very sharp knife (I used a scalpel) and pry the top off the earbud from the end that had the ring mounted by inserting the knife between the top piece and the metal element. Note that it's attached with a little glue, so it will take some coaxing to get off.

This isn't really a solution, but should be relevant.  If you think that cleaning might be the issue, don't be too afraid to really dig in there.  The part you see is just a cover, not the speaker diaphragm itself.  I've had the tip part fall off (well, sort of break off) and that whole assembly doesn't do anything but cover the speaker.  The real deal is pretty deep in.

SOURCE: Humming sound in the left earpiece

Hi all,

Mine has had the same problem as the rest, and I just fixed mine. I hope this solution will work for
the rest of you also. The problem is with R82 located on the pcboard in the left ear piece. This
is a variable resistor. Inside this resistor it develops a condition called a dry contact where the
wiper isn't making contact with the conductive surface. If the pot is moved a bit then returned
to its original position, it wipes the contact clean and restores normal function. To access this
pot, remove the ear pad and fold down the cloth from the top just enough to get to the screw
that is closest to the top. After removing this screw, you can remove the arch shaped cover
on the outside. R82 is labeled. The problem is they put a drop of glue to prevent the pot from
rotating. GENTLY! remove the drop of glue. I used a sharp knife and wedged it between the
pot and the glue, do not put too much pressure on the pot. Once the glue has been removed,
not the position of the pot and turn it slightly and the return it to its original position. That is all.

For those designing circuits, make sure that you have about 1mA of current through the wiper
during normal operation. This will prevent this problem.

This may not work for you and I am not responsible for making a mess from your headphones
so try it at your own risk.

Let me know if it works.

SOURCE: left side of my headphone is not working

That often happens because of a contact on the headphone wiring, The only way to fix it is by taking apart headphones, testing the wire, and checking the headphones solder joints on the speakers and on jack connector, that usually are responsible for this kind of problems.

Only the left side of my Blackweb Headphones work. What's the problem?

While they may be wireless, there is a cable that runs from one side to the controller on the other side. Check this cable to make sure there are no outward signs of damage.

Why no more sound in left side? the right side is fine. i moved the left side like a seesaw, then i found where the sound occur. is it the wire connection problem inside the left side? what to do?

Opened up one of the earcups and dont ask me how it was just by force. The cable that connects the 2.5 to the speaker is frail and there is quite a bit of shielded cable that can rub against each other over time. I fixed it by removing the cable and soldering in two separate cables of similar size.

Replacing minijack

I use a multimeter to check the connections to the ear pieces. I set it to the diode function. The meter's test probes also have a very low dc voltage and this causes a 'click' sound in the working earpiece. Some earphones have 3 wires, others have 4 wires. In the 3-wire setup, one wire is the common wire. It goes to the ground connection of the mini plug. The 'click' sound on the left ear piece should go to the tip of the connector. The 'click' sound that you get on the right ear piece should be soldered to the 'ring' of the mini plug. The 4-wire type of earphone/ headphones cable usually have two wires that are the same colour. These are the ground or common connections for both right and left. I hope that this helps. A multimeter or vom is a necessity. Len.

I got these headphones and they were working perfectly but one day the right side just stopped working. even after plugging it into my ipod and laptop the right side still doesnt work. what should i do?

The wire carrying the signal to the right side has probably been damaged. You have to be careful with the wires and should not wind them up too tightly. Try seeing if you can get a sound by moving the wire close to the point where it enters the right earpiece. If you can, then it may be possible to resolder the broken connection to fix them otherwise, I'm afraid you'll have to get a new pair of headphones

If I jiggle the cord in the stereo outliet, the sound switches from left to right earpiece and has to be just right in the outlet to get both earpieces working at the same time.

If you plug the headphones into another device do they stay on solid?
The problem can be the cord/plug (headphones) or the socket which your plugging into. Socket might need re-soldered or replaced.

Head phones problem

You have a weak connection somewhere, either a kink in the cable or a bad connection where the cable connects to the right earpiece. It sounds like they need replacing I'm afraid.
