Hello There is option to reset the set to its factory settings. Reset factory setting ikon [ a red round ikon with counter clockwise ringed arrow. Tap this to reset your TomTom XL. For more details, go to the page [36] of its user manual. All proceedings are described there. OK.
It is because of you just upgrade your device. Not to worry. If you can't switch on/off, try harder. Press on/off button for on/off purpose until on/off. After that, the device works properly.
The simplest way is to have your dad insert a paper clip tip into the "Reset" hole in the gps case. This will set the unit back to factory defaults and it will prompt on startup to select a language.
