You can restore the system to factory conditions by following the information below.
Dell Factory Image Restore The Dell Factory Image Restore tool replaces PC Restore. Access it from the F8 boot menu.
Start the computer and TAP the F8 key. Once the options appear on the screen you can choose Repair Your Computer and follow the prompts to restore the computer to factory conditions.
CAUTION:
This utility formats the operating system hard drive partition prior to restoring the factory image. This means data on that partition is deleted and cannot be recovered.
If the customer creates a second partition with a third-party utility, Dell Factory Image Restore is not affected as long as the image partition is not removed.

Open control panel -> network and sharing center (Vista/Win 7) and change adapter settings. See if wireless network card is available. If not, get the driver from manufacturers web site and install it.
If the driver is installed, check that WLAN is not disabled by some mechanical button on laptop. Some models have these.

I am no expert by a long shot but is the fan running in safe mode is it overheating and shutting down?

You have to instal the driver for wifi adapter separately from the CD that came with the box, if u dont have the CD, visit the official website of dell and download and install the driver, follow the link;

this is what u need

the problem can be many:--
1.go to device manager and check under network adapters,,whether any wireless card is present or not,,if yes,,check whether there is a yellow bang beside it??if yes then the drivers need to be reinstalled,,if it still doesnt resolve the prob. then the hardware may be faulty.sometimes u might see a option "network controller" then u need to reinstall the WLAN card drivers.but if you dnt see any option of WLAN card or network controller,then u hav to open up the computer and reseat the card.if still doesnt work,,then replace the card

If Vista:

If XP:
Dell Vostro 1000 audio driver for XP., if it won't install then first reinstall Dell Vostro 1000 chipset driver..
