I'm digitising my old cassettes. I have a good quality Technics cassette deck, a good Cambridge Audio amp and appropriate software on my computer to do the job. I generally know what I'm doing, but what is best re connecting up the cassette deck:- 1. a line interconnect straight to the computer or 2. line interconnect via the Cambridge Audio amp and then a further inter connect line to the computer? The first way produces a clearer sound, the second way a more refined sound. Both ways produce very satisfactory results, but which way is technically the best way? I imagine the less inter connect used the better, but on the other hand does going through Cambridge Audio amp potentially produce better results than going through the computer amplification system or does it not make any significant difference and come down just to taste and what I prefer to listen to? Any ideas?

There are 2 long switches, maybe 4" long, called record/play switches. These can certainly cause this. Try cleaning them with the power unplugged. You would turn the cassette deck on end, so the switches are vertical. Use LPS-1 or LPS-2, and spray a very small amount in the end. Work the switch back and forth and see if that helps. Good luck.
All you can do is look on E bay for someone who is selling such an item. The fact that they are no longer produced is going to make the price high. This is the reality of cassette tape decks these days.
It's a simple job for a repairer - if you can find one that will have anything to do with audio cassette technology anymore, sorry, but I'm finding that some won't. Not knowing where you are I don't know which currency you use but if it helps, here in the UK I'd say don't spend more than £25 on this. There are still new cassette decks made and lots of good used ones around. I know Technics is a very good make but I was looking at superb condition Nakamichis the other week for £35 which are a far better brand.
Place the tape you want to record into the left deck, Then the blank tape into the right deck. Press play on the left deck and record on the right deck.
It may be opposite depending on which side your recording deck is on.
Which ever deck has record, place blank cassette into that one and the cassette you want to copy into the other deck.
Ahh, Another Dual cassette deck. These are typically not worth a repair charge. I went looking for a service manual but Hi Fi Engine did not have one but they had a Owners Manual. Any unit that has a specification as to wow and flutter starting new at .18% was never made to be a long lasting deck of any quality. I don't like to be negative about people equipment but you might be better off getting a better deck from the start. If you think it is worth the repair, then send it to someone but I don't think you will want to sink $100 into a unit like this. I am not saying it is unrepairable but that with what you come out in the end you could have made a better choice for a deck to buy. It is probably a bad solder joint or bad capacitor on the circuit board. I am in Chicago and would look at it for you if you want.
