Sorry I re-read my request for help and realised it sounded confused! It was 2am in the morning when I posted it - totally frustrated with the ASUS router interface software. :) I will attempt to explain again calmly this time - apologies for the hysterical cry for "help"! :) -you know how computers and process of elimination processes can get!? New day no wireless connections on my computer 1. I setup a new wireless connection via windows xp wizard.... I choose Auto (not manual this time) system "generates a "network key" automatically for me i.e. (WEP/WPA KEY) - it gives me a 26 hex code which I print for future reference input (it autom. uses Data encryption type WEP, Connection type: ESS ) Network connection name Jen's Wifi 2. I press the reset button on the back of Asus WL520g router; hold for 30 seconds. 3. go to "view wireless connections" - I see "Default Automatic" - IT IS UNSECURED - but Jen's Wifi connects to "default" good signal etc. etc. Now this is where the problem starts - I want to password my wireless connection - I go to internet browser and (file server not found ) so I go to the address field and enter 192.168.1.1 - and get on to the ASUS interface software - login as "admin" go to quick set up and choose 2nd option connection type " ADSL requiring username password, PPope connection........." this type assigns ip address/es automatical (dynamic not STATic) also DNS keys. the PASS PHARASE I ENTER IS THE NETWORK KEY 26 hex code generated from the XP Wizard Wireless connection (WEP key 1 10 or 26 hex.... key 2, 3, and 4, shows below on the screen input as I type in my 26 hex code).... I name SSID as "Jen's Router" Save and restart Jen's Wifi connects to Jen's Router - It asks for network key and I enter the 26 hex again twice to verify - all good get CONNECTED BUT CANNOT GET INTERNET BROWSER CONNECTION - even with shut down power up re do etc.... SUMMARY; THE ONLY TIME I CAN GET BROWSER CONNECT IS when I use Jen's Wifi to connect to "Default" Wireless connection after reboot - i.e. I CAN LOG ONTO THE INTERNET ALL GOOD UNTIL PASSWORD / MY WIRELESS CONNECTION VIA the ASUS wireless router software. I tried finding new firmware latest drivers 2004 ...?? Any further input? Thanks for any assistance Kind Regards Jenny B 1. I go to 192.168.1.1

You have changed the network key, but why update the username and password as it should always be the same which is the one supplied to you to connect to your service providers connection, assuming you mean the security key, go to your pc and search for your network again, as it will be trying to connect to a non existant unsecured router. When it searches and finds the networks in your area, choose yours click connect and the enter password window should pop up to be entered. Go to your browser and clear old temp files and cookies in tools, internet options, restart pc and you should assuming you have put the correct settings in be online.

Try resetting the Linksys.
To reset the Linksys back to the default settings - Press and hold the pinhole RESET button at the back of the router with the power ON for 20 secs. then release the RESET button.
To connect to your wireless router, the router's wireless settings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also the wireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access.

How do you enable security for linksys wireless routers

  1. Type "http://192.168.1.1" into your Internet browser, and press "Enter."
  2. When login page opens up, type the username and password for your wireless router.Depending on your router brand, you may have "admin" and "password" as the respective default username and password. But again, you must refer to your wireless router support manual.
  3. Once logged in, click "Wireless Security" and Select "WEP" as the security encryption type
  4. Set the default transmit key to "1".
  5. Type in a passphrase and click "Generate". This generates random passkeys.
  6. Note down your network's SSID (listed on the security page) and the first WEP key. This is the information that you will need when trying to allow new connection through the wireless network.

How to secure the wireless network

You want to secure the wireless network.
Is there any computer connected to the router with the Ethernet cable?
If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router with the cable.
Check the IP address on the computer. Open the router set up page.
Once you open the set up page, you will find the option to make it secured

Did a pc resolve on my desktop now no internet connection, cept on wireless not on desktop..says unsecured?

You may have forgot your network key (encryption key) but do you have your password for your router? if so you can use a wired connection to login and create a new encryption key. If you cant login to your router you will have to set it back to default and reprogram it

Renaming Linksys BEFSX41 router and securing it.

It sound to me that you have a wireless card in your laptop and you are picking up your neighbors wireless router!!!! which has no SSID set, thus "default" and has no encryption set, thus "unsecured network". Turn off your wireless adapter The only security on a Non-Wireless router is turning on the firewall. It should be enabled by default. The other thing would be to change the password on your router, but since you do not have a wireless router, then it is pointless, unless you do not want someone in your house to access the router settings and make changes. Ever then, if someone in your house that is physically connected to the router with a "cable" could alway walk to the router and stick a pin in the the "reset" hole in the back of the router to reset wipe any changes that was made, so a password is pointless as far as I am concerned for non-wirelss routers. open your browser and type http://192.168.1.1 Admin User name: Leave it blank Password: admin Once you login you can change your password if you like.
