SOURCE: i have a craftsman rotary

I will walk you thru this fix. Usually this happens when something is hit, rock, pipe in ground, tree root, etc. This is a safety devise that is incorporated into every lawn machine to keep them out of junkyards. But the tragedy is that when people can't start there machines they through them out any way. To me, this is a real shame.
I will assume that you have the ability to do this job. Remove the top cover to your engine and any attachments. This will expose the flywheel. Remove the nut that holds the flywheel down tight. Look at the top of the flywheel where the crankshaft comes thru. You will see a small square hole, this is where the shear key goes. If this hole isn't square that means the shear key has been sheared, or possibly just dented, you will see it. Remove the flywheel with a puller tool, replace the shear key, replace all parts, and start mowing. I hope I have helped you, if you have any other questions please contact me. GOOD LUCK.

If your carburetor has sat for a few months with fuel in it, the fuel may have gone bad. Fuel turns to turpentine after a while and leaves light yellow deposits behind. These deposits will keep your carb. from working properly. You need to dip the carb. in carburetor dip for a few hours to get rid of the deposits. You can also take the carb. to your local parts store where they may do it for free.
You may also have to replace the gasket and needle valve too if it has been sitting. So basically, you need to do a carburetor rebuild.
If the float sounds like it has liquid in it, you will need to replace it too.
Good Luck!

You cant remove one without the other, buy yourself a vacum pump ( there are plenty of cheap hand operated syringe types available ) and suck it out through the dip stick hole.

Loud noise metal against metal sound

Check under your mower and see if the blade sheild has bent in towards the blade. This could be your problem. If so take a hammer and tap the sheild back in place. GOOD LUCK.
