You can order recovery CD from Dell. Or altenatively, buy Windows XP in retail package at your local store (or used on eBay). By the way, you can install from a borrowed XP CD, since you have a valid serial number. (You will need the serial number from your borrowed CD and you may change the serial after installation). If you go on the later (and affordable solution) I can send you links to download FREE utility to change the serial.

My Dell Inspiron 6400 (Windows XP Home) won't reboot. It's giving me a "Loading PBR for descriptor 1 ... done" line on a black screen. What can I do to fix it. Can I salvage my content / files

Before you use the Recovery CD you need to backup your data because to restoring your laptop will wipe your data off the hard disk.
To backup your data when you cannot boot up your laptop, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Connect this hard drive/USB adapter into the USB port of a working computer. The computer will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and backup your data.
You can then fit the hard drive back into the Dell laptop and boot up with the Dell recovery CD to reinstall Windows etc.

It should have come with a system restore disk. Back up what you want to save and load the disk and then reboot.

You can go to compaq.com and order the system restore disk if you can't find the one that came with the computer.

Lap top dell inspiron 6400, cant get into windows,

Have you tried doing a winXP repair:

XP repair
When you boot with the Dell Win XP install CD-ROM, it loads a minimal operating system, similar to DOS, but compatible with Win XP. At the first screen you select install Win XP (not Recovery Console) and at the next screen it will find that you already have Win XP and offer to attempt a repair. This repair should not touch your Applications or data; it just reinstalls the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software.

If the repair does not fix it :

If you have documents you need, you would have to set the hard drive in an enclosure and copy the files over. Then you can run the Dell recovery disk . This will set it up as when it came from Dell.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Hi i dont have a windows ex cd with me..i lost it and i need to format my computer and reinstall xp again. can anyone help me? is it possible to download ex from the net?

Contact the Manufacturer for the Installation CD... they may charge you for it but it's cheaper than buying a new copy of XP... or look on ebay for a recovery cd but make sure it's for the same brand of computer or it wont work
