Well, it sounds like you went the proper route. My first suggestion is to UNINSTALL the old driver and software first before installing the new one.
Also, take care to note whether you have the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7, because they take very different drivers and software. Also, you have to watch closely on the HP site that it specifically says "64 bit" on the drivers if you do happen to have 64 bit Win 7. It's a pain sometimes.
HP is aware of the problem and has made a solution available here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01960605&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3742086

because it is clear to me: you need a reinstall the driver and software for your printer. the latest utility can be found follow that link. don't forgot to uninstall your old driver in order to install the new driver. the complementary software is not necessary to be uninstalled.
on that site page select software & driver downloads and for your problem, you MUST download and install: "HP full Solution Software Driver"
Problem Solved. I'm not sure what exactly was the answer but here is the steps I followed. First I went to the HP website and followed their procedure to uninstall hidden devices (namely duplicate HP devices). I uninstalled all of the devices. Then (with the USB cable still attached) I deleted the Printer and Scanner from Control Panel. At this point I disconnected the USB cable (the cable worked but the software wouldn't recognize the cable was attached). With the cable unattached, I uninstalled all the HP software with the 'remove software' program in control panel. The I used the original disk for the printer and reinstalled the software. Eventually the installation process prompted me to reinstall the USB cable. It was at this point the software started to recognize the cable again. And here is the best part, after the software finished installing the 'Scan To' button started working correctly!!!!
