Sounds like lowered water pressure, or plugged inlet screen at sprinkler or hose, Or City has reduced pressure. Or trash in the outlet nozzles themselves, or It's been dropped and bent. Or?
NO!! Never drill holes in any sprinkler system as the size and shape of the holes are very carefully worked out to give you the best cover. Check that your system is running at the designed pressure. This is all important as if it is too much or too little the pattern delivered will be wrong and not efficient. Small holes and high pressures waste water by evapourating too much and cost too much energy to run. Low pressures can result in big droplets which carry well but may over shoot or undershoot the desired path. The most efficient distribution graph of any irrigator is designed to work within relatively narrow parameters.
You really should consult a qualified irrigation technician.
If it's going backwards, and assuming you didn't take it apart and put it together wrong, then the arms aren't going in the right direction. Looking down from the top, my unit should be moving clockwise if it's set up correctly. In any case, switch it so the water pushes the arms in the other direction. the transmission is pretty straightforward - if it's going in the wrong direction then the arms are spinning in the wrong direction.
Check if the top sprinkler arm sprinkles any water. If it got some years the screw on which holds the arm might be worn out and that could, depending on the model, result in water only flowing straight down to the second arm. Or the sprinkler arm could be clogged, I would check it out anyhow.
Can you provide more information on symptoms:
Does machine fill?
Does water come out of the spray arms a) at all and b) in convincing quantities (part way through the cycle, switch off, open the door straight away and see what is happening inside).
Do you get the same problem if you run the machine without any dishes in?
Can the spray arms be turned freely by hand?
Knowing the answers to these should help narrow the problem down.
