Yes, all HP Deskjet printer models feature a 'single cartridge print mode'. Just remove the cartridge you don't wish to print with; the printer will automatically revert into either greyscale printing (if color cartridge remains installed) or black only printing (if the black cartridge remains installed). However, if the installed ink cartridge is electrically damaged/defective the printer will display an alert message; it will need to be replaced with a new cartridge.

SOURCE: printing problems

Unfortunately there is little you can do to troubleshoot hardware malfunctions like this you describe. Especially on inkjet printers. You would be better off getting a replacement printer.

Make sure you take the plastic guards off the cartridges, other than that there really isn't much more you can do.

SOURCE: I have an HP Deskjet 6122. Cannot get documents

Your printer needs some manual servicing.
It's advised that you leave it for a qualified technician to do that.
From the problem you described, the encoder sensor may be causing this problem.

Do I have to have a color cartridge in order to print? Can I just use a black ink cartridge?

The HP DeskJet 6122 can print with both or only one ink cartridge installed. The printer driver includes an option to print in gray scale as a substitution for color. If you choose to print a document that has a color other than black and white with only a black cartridge installed, I recommend you select the gray scale print option. To select gray scale, select the printer properties and check the box for gray scale rather than color printing. This selection can be made either at the time a document is ready to print (ie., a one time selection, using the "Properties" box in the print options window), OR as a permenant setting using the Control Panel, Printers, HP DeskJet 6122, "Properties" window. Once changed in the general printer properties, these settings remain active anytime the HP DeskJet 6122 printer is selected to print a document.

Will hp deskjet 6122 print on black ink only?

No. You must have ink in all cartridges for the printer to work.

My HP Inkjet 6122 has suddenly started printing color photos with stripes. I don't use it very often, only when I need color photos. I have replaced both the #45 black and #78 color cartridges with genuine...

Use the HP Printer Assistant software tools to run a "head-cleaning" cycle -- the problem is not with the ink (there is plenty of it) but with the print-heads (that **** the ink, and then spray it onto the paper). Some of the jets are clogged, and so you get "white-stripes".

Greetings - have a full black cartridge yet prints green?

This printer uses all 4 inks to make black by default. You have run out of magenta in the color cartridge. Go to printing preferencies, Color tab. Check Print in Grayscale and tick "Black only" to disable color use.

Color is wrong

Have you tried replacing the cartridges? Some programs such as Adobe Reader will generate a "black" equivalent from the color cartridge. In this case, if the color cartridge is low in red, the outcome will be blue. This would signify that the color cartridge needs to be replaced. HP supplied a utility program for the HP6122 to detect and report ink levels. If you have this utility, check the levels. The utility will only work if the computer is directly connected to the printer -- not thru a print server. If you don't have the utility, you should be able to get it at the HP website http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=83028&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=88749

You might find that both the black and the color cartridges are out of ink. Some print drivers can detect when the black cartridge is empty, then attempts to print a black equivalent using the color cartridge.
