If the agitator shaft is working properly, it is either the splines on the agitator or the bell coupling that is defective. If the agitator shaft does not work properly, the problem is in the transmission.
The agitator coupling beneath the agitator needs replacing. It is stripped. Pull hard on the agitator to pull it off the shaft to expose the coupling. Remove the coupling and replace it with a new one. Replace the agitator. If the agitator is hard to remove,use a old leather belt under the agitator to pull up on. Watch your nose when it comes loose.

Hi, Do you know if the lower half of the agitator is working? THere is a dog kit that might need replaced in the agitator to get the top half to work. If neither half agitates, there is probably a transmission issue. Start the washer with no laundry in it and see if either sections of the agitator work.

Check the agitator by turning it back and forth. It should work like a
ratchet (turns one way, locks the other way).If you're able to turn it
in both directions, the agitator dogs are worn and need to be replaced.
To do this remove the agitator cap and the bolt that holds down the
agitator. With the bolt out you can remove the top section of the
agitator (auger) where you should see 4 small white or beige plastic
gears (dogs). Replace those and it should be ok.
