Is the input volume low only from the Denon drm 700? What happens with any other device?

hmmm...sounds like the transport motor/foot are stuck..open it up, and inspect around those items(where the tape actually clamps down) and see if you can see anything in there. Might even be a bug, no fooling..

as to repairs..you are most likely talking some major money, and a long time in the repair depot, which I believe is in Rio..I'll check that for you while you do this part.

The unit either needs a new belt, Capstan bearing oiling as in taking the flywheel out and if this does not fix it a new capstan motor. The motor is adjustable with a small screw driver provided you have the appropriate wow and flutter meter and test tape to do the job.

This may mean the takeup reel is intermittent or that he cam system of the transport is not getting the correct feedback. I have hd some decks that had very little back tension and they would skew tape- and the audio would be gone before they would shut off. The deck need restorative work done to it and now is the time before is eats all your tapes up.

Sounds like a mechanical fault, you need to look around to see if anything has broken or fell off. Some decks use a solenoid to move rollers up and down, that could have a fault on it.

Just bought a unit from a thrift store. Found same problem; FF & RW OK, but play engages then stops. Also noticed buzzing noise when power turned on. Opened unit, found broken capstan drive belt. FF & RW driven from different motor. Buzz was drive motor running freely with no load - when power is on, capstan is driven all the time for fast play/record start. Replaced with rubber band, and it works --- now looking for replacement belt.
