My D40 rolled off my couch and broke my flash. After watching a video, I opened up the flash and got the flash working, but now the flash won't pop up... After messing with multiple pieces (while reading others advice), we have determined that either the flash works and does NOT pop up. Or doesn't work and pops up... There is no such thing as both items working.... Anyone have a clue??? HELP. I dont want to spend $200 to get it fixed when a brand new camera would be a smarter option

Check to make sure the flash up switch on the side of the flash (the switch you see where the wires go through when you remove the flash top) is not under the activation rod on the pivot, the pivot is not pushed in, or the activation rod is not broken off. The switch should close when the flash goes up and be open when it is down. A lot of times you see the top contact stuck under the activation rod. Also check the continuity of the two thin switch wires as sometimes they are borken inside by impact

SOURCE: Flash pops up but does not flash

Turning the Flash Off and On: 1. With the camera in any user set, repeatedly press the Flash/ISO button on the lens barrel until the flash cancel icon (a lightning bolt in a circle with a slash through it) is displayed on the control panel and screen. 2. When finished, to return to the default setting, press the Flash/ISO button until AUTO and the lightning bolt icon are displayed on the control panel and no flash icon is displayed on the screen. If it still doesnt help: 1. Check that batteries are fresh. 2. Check that camera hasn't been set for no-flash mode. 3. Give the flash time to charge before pressing shutter.

SOURCE: Flash: PCB Replacement v. New Bulb!?

I just read a few forums about this, and apparently it is a common problem on D50s. The flash pops up with such force that eventually the wiring and/or bracket that pops it up comes loose or breaks, and the camera needs to go in for repair. It probably isn't the bulb.

I'm looking into getting a D80 or better anyway once I have some money saved up, but until then I am using my SB-600. I'd suggest taking it to a repair center if it's still under warranty. If not it will run you around $150-160 to get it fixed, and takes about a month, according to what I read.

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: Nikon D40 will not flash

The lightning bolt icon in viewfinder blinks when flash is not ready, this can happen if flash doesnt pop up all the way, or if flash strobe tube is bad.

Flash won't pop up

Hello

Thank you for using FixYa for your problem

Always check the batteries first but if is it still giving the same fault, your camera is faulty.
It should be taken to an authorized repair centre for a repair estimate. Very few digital cameras have any user-serviceable parts.

Please rate our solutions and if you still have problems please call back for more ideas to help you

Auto flash wont work

did it pop up automatically or did you pop it manually? if it popped up by itself then the flash unfortunately is probably dead, since on automatic, it won't pop unless it's going to fire. If you popped it manually then - the camera doesn't think that the flash is necessary for the conditions that you're shooting in.

Flash not popping up - did i push something?

Make sure you're not shooting on no-flash auto mode. Also, in P, A, and M modes you'll have to press the flash button on the side of the camera by the lens mount in order for the flash to pop up. If it's not popping on regular auto mode, make sure you don't have it disabled in the menu.

Nikon d40 flash won't fire

Hi,

If it clicks when the flash is already open, it seems there would be a problem with the flash open sensor. The camera thinks the flash is closed, so it tries to open it again and it refuses to fire, because firing in the closed position would blow the bulb.

The D40 flash is a bit different, but if you open it (just unscrew the two little screws in front) you'll recognize the sensor clips. Open and close the flash and see if the make contact when open.

(And DON'T fire the flash when open, or at the very least don't touch anything in there when firing or you'll get zapped.

Goodluck..
