My 17-55 lens sent to Canon Canada for repair of I.S. 2 mo later got it back, worked for one week. Now the IS has an electrical short..rapidly clicking , can't use the lens, won't turn off unless I remove the battery from the 50D. Should I wait 2 mo more again, or take it to a local shop? Need the unit.

Anything can be fixed but at this point the cost of repair would exceed the value of a new camera. If this camera were in Canada the shipping and repair estimate would cost you $100.00 Canadian.

Add the cost of repair less the estimate and you most probably are looking at about $160.00 Canadian.

Short answer most often after a drop like this and the lens gets stuck it's not worth fixing them.

My tomtom rider 2 will not charge on my bike and will not charge from mains electric, when i use my tomtom in the car it works.

Like all electronics, water is it's worst enemy so even by drying it (which is commendable) you still may have traces of water somewhere on the circuit board. We all know water is conductive, so if some solder tracks were shorted there can be a problem there or if the water has corroded through a solder track the circuit fails. There are numerous chips in the camera that are super tiny so even the slightest water can damage them.

In my experience when something is water damaged (and seriously water damaged) it is beyond repair.

That is usually a symptom of a main board failure. About all you can do it send it in to get fixed. You can try the usual reset by taking the batteries out but that tends to be pretty useless. I had a G3 do the same thing sent in to the repair depot and had it back in a week.

It most likely was a short in the repaired lens that caused the sensor to go bad over time.

I have been shooting with Canon cameras and lenses for many years and I do not always turn off power before switching lenses. It is not a big deal.

Alright, so well I just got off information from canon support, and they said to hard restart (1. take out batt/memory card 2. turn the camera to on. leave for 20 seconds 3. press shutter button 6 times 4. let sit for 30 minutes) Then to use it after those 30 minutes. If it doesn't work, just send it into canon.

Assuming the battery has a full charge, take a peek at the batt and camera contacts to make sure they're clean. If dirty, you can use an eraser to gently clean the contacts. If it still doesn't function, have a camera repair shop provide a quote for repair. Then you can decide whether or not to purchase a new body.

Email Canon with your problem. I had a Canon S1 IS camera. It failed on me in June 2008. It started to display lines across the Lcd screen intermittently, until a week later it completely failed. It would turn on but no display on screen when switched to camera mode.
I emailed Canon and they replied to send it to them and if it was a malfunction with the camera they would repaired it free of charge. I sent the camera to Canon ( Canada) and 2 weeks later they sent me a new S5 IS because the faulty ccd image board was on back order. I am very happy with Canon and would continue to purchase Canon products because of their customer service ....they seem to stand by their products.

The autofocus mechanism in your camera and lens is very complicated and can get out of "calibration" causing AF problems. Of course there are external factors that can cause this as well (dust, moisture, shock, etc). In Africa these external factors may come more into play than usual.

Of course the first and obvious remedies to try includes such things as:

1. Cycling your AF/MF a couple of times (switch it back and
forth a few times to see if it helps)
2. Removing your lens from the camera body and cleaning the
metal contacts there (preferably with an electrical contact
cleaner, but an eraser will do in a pinch)
3. Performing a hard reset on your camera (Resetting the set-
tings to default, removing the batteries for a few minutes,
and then reinstalling them)

If none of these help, use your Manual Focus until you can have the lens sent into a Canon Service Center for calibration and possible repair. Good luck.

I don't believe a "lens error" can be fixed at home. That is something that is going to have to be sent in. Sometimes if repairing the camera costs more than what it's worth Casio will offer you a trade up to a different model. Call the repairs dept and ask them about that program. Their number is 800-706-2534 and keep choosing option 1.
