I suspect the part must have been on order from Japan for the repair to take that long. If you are confident the lens is the source of clicking/failure then I would suggest sending it back. I'm sure the repair warranty would ensure a speedier return than the first time.
I love this lens, but I have the same problem.
On my 30D: A) There is a switching sound in the lens, and the aperture figures in the LCD, according to the switching, go back and forth from 00 to the desired setting. B) The IS only works sometimes. C) When I attach the lens to my 50D the camera refuses to turn on.
I have a 7 year Mack warranty, but it seems they are not happy to repair it, as it takes long for them to respond to me.
