HOW TO TURN DECODER OFF TO RECECIVE SOUND - Yamaha RX-V371 A/V Receiver

Sound and motion decoder are the same address. Try F8 that mutes and unmutes the sound, If that doesn't work Change CV 8 to 8, that resets the decoder to factory settings. You will have to re enter the address as the decoder reverts to address 03. If all else fails check that the speaker is wired properly, if that doesn't work you may have a bad decoder that should be under warranty.

You may have to go to a Digitrax N /HO scale decoder for it to fit. The decoder handles motor functions OK but a sound N scale has very low volume as the speaker is very small. I have done this a few times with good results. Or put the decoder in the tender and run the 30ga wires to the engine

Try moving the decoder to the other side of the TV, or farther away. The TV audio circuit may be picking up electromagnetic noise from the digital circuitry in the decoder. Another possibility is a defective audio circuit in the decoder.

If you are connecting the decoder to the antenna input on the TV, the problem may be a misaligned (mistuned) audio modulator output in the decoder. In that case, if you have the option of using a different TV channel on both units, try that.

It's telling you the digital decoder is now "off" and will treat everything like 5.1. THAT is a selection you choose, not a status that spontaneously appears. Perhaps someone unknowingly touched the remote while playing.

Get the manual out and read up on DECODER. Page 61 (Troubleshooting: NO SOUND) suggests "A proper audio decoder is not selected". Try AUTO.

Or, track the digital source of your TV audio back to make sure it still works.

This is clearly a manufacture defect right off the assembly line. From your description you have a serious intermittent problem with the AVR unit when it comes to selection and other choices and it will only get worse, I strongly suggest you return the item in favor of another.

I sense two different problems or one not completely described.

The followinbg would address the decoder issue.

It partially depends on what it is you're trying to play or how you like to hear it.

Check the Direct Mode Button and make sure it's not activated. (M on page 4).

Straight Mode (L on page 4) is a desirable starting point for multichannel material.

Be advised that most commercial multichannel sound sources have been pre-mixed by the originators to provide an intended 'feel' and 'space', so modifying it might not be an improvement although it can provide a novel change. Like any spice, a little is best.

I find that processing 2-channel audio through the various DSP modes can make for some interesting and arguably pleasing effects.

If you 'search' the document for the word "decoder" it may lead you to a setting that's out of place.

"Not able to play music" should only happen if you have a source incorrectly chosen or the source is DTS and the decoder is off. Undecoded DTS will sound like high-level digital 'hash' noise because you're hearing the raw 'data' so it must be decoded to turn it into audio.

tuner or stereo decoder ic or cap in its decoder circuit, your dvd is sending audio through patch cords bypassing tuner - decoder audio circuit. advise just getting digital tuner from oboma and that will cure your problem.

mine does the same thing.. so far I have no clue other than it may be detecting input from devices like vcr..dvd etc..
