Mowing with a tiger cat and heard a noise and shut off the mower and the clutch was very hot. when I went to restart the battery was very weak. Is the clutch toast?

Could be clutch was slipping from low voltage, or there's a bad connection in the clutch circuit or the PTO switch is failing.

With engine running, check charging systems is producing over 14VDC at battery terminals.

Inspect for damaged wiring.

With engine off and key in run position, you should hear the clutch engage and disengage as turn PTO ON and OFF.

How do gears to drive pto go in the manual transmission

If your transmission is PTO ready, there will be a plate on the side of the tans where the PTO bolts to it. The PTO will have a gear that goes into the transmission that is driven off of a gear on the input shaft. You will be able to engage and disengage the PTO by a slip gear in the PTO itself.

Mower blades won't engage

Did the smoking stop when you disengaged the blades? If so it is most likely your belt that is smoking. Make sure all the blades turn freely by hand to ensure you have not hit anything that may have bent a shaft on one of the blades. If one of the shafts is bent and wont turn FREELY, the belt driving the blades would slip and start smoking as it tried to turn them.

PTO engages, but, keeps becoming disengaged on LT1042.

Cub Cadets have one of two types of PTOs. The most common is gear driven. The gear teeth of the PTO shaft are very small and thin. If the PTO is engaged without proper clutch action, the gear teeth grind together, trying to engage. A little wear on these gears will cause the surface of the gears to become beveled, and when the PTO comes under load, the beveled surfaces of the gear teeth force the gear lock to disengage. The only option is to replace the worn gears...

The second type of PTO drive is electric clutch. This is a disc type clutch that is engaged by energizing an electromagnet built into the clutch pack... any disruption of electrical power to the clutch pack while under load will cause the clutch to disengage and then possibly try to engage while under load and casues the clutch pack to slip and will overheat almost instantly...

JD STX38 PTO disengages and melts the PTO switch? As I'm mowing along the blades disengage and then I push the PTO switch down and back up and the yellow button comes out and shows the bottom of it...

Electric Blade Clutch is shorted or if you are lucky the wiring to the clutch is grounded. Many times the wiring to the clutch is caught in debris or twigs etc. and pulls the wiring out and cuts and grounds it.

I have a JD 1070 4 wh dr, when running a brush hog on the back pto, what would make the pto shaft slow down under a load when cutting light brush, funny smell. Checked all oil levels.

Reading on line, I see your tractor has a PTO clutch. It must be slipping. It either needs adjusted or replaced. A slipping clutch disc will make a bad smell.
