Have a friend with a WinVista Home Edition desktop PC abandoned by a previous roomate, but WinVista is password protected. How can the password for the system be reset without obliterating the operating system by writing over it with a newly-purchased incarnation of MSWindows?

well I have never seen that kind of a problem, if all the hardware is ok, it must be software problem, virus possibly? a fresh install would be a sure fire fix.

There is a way to reset windows password without erasing anything.
Follow the instructions:

1.Free download the iso file : http://www.resetwindowspassword.com

2.Burn it to a disk to create the boot disk, that simple.

3.Configure your pc or laptop to boot in the cd drive,

4.Insert the CD, reboot from CD drive, and then just follow the process of instruction. A few steps later, admin password would be cleared

Took about 5 minutes for the whole process.

right click on my computer icon then click on manage then go to user and groups management.
Then select your user whose you want to change password.
then rightclick user and reset password if you want reset.

Connect your hard disk as secondary to some other machine and back up your data. Then reinstall the Operating System. Resetting the Password is a wrong process for admin account and is not encouraged.
