Here's a link to an online John Deere parts store. When you land on the page, look at the top sub categories for the size of deck your mower has. You should be able to access a parts diagram with pictures of your belt's proper placement. http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.HomePageServlet_Alt
Also see if you can locate the mower deck model number i.e STX 38, STX 42 (Deck color Black or Yellow?) Should be a silver decal with black lettering. Also... there is supposed to be a belt routing diagram on the mower deck. (Another silver decal with the belt routing picture)
Try the John Deere parts website https://jdparts.deere.com or give sullivans a call they are a john deere dealer and are garden machinery experts they will be able to explain to you what to do. you can find their contact info on their website http://www.sullivansgardenmachinery.co.uk
The pulley at a wierd angle is the tension pulley. You may get the manual on line for free if you are lucky but not all mower manufacturers are that generous. What kind of mower do u have?
