Connecting Laptop wireless and Desktop wired to the router

I have DI-524 wireless router, a laptop with wireless adapter and a Desktop. The goal is to connect laptop and PC to each other... and also get internet connection through a modem, which will be connected to DI-254.

I tried the following 3 ways:
a)
Internet Modem connects to <-> WAN port of router using ethernet cable.
Laptop connects to the router wirelessly
Desktop connects to router by wire to the WLAN-1 PORT using ethernet cable
Issue: Desktop does not get internet access

b)
Internet Modem connects to <-> WLAN-1 port of router using ethernet cable.
Laptop connects to the router wirelessly
Desktop connects to router by wire to the WLAN-2 PORT using ethernet cable
Issue: Laptop does not get internet access

c)
Internet Modem connects to <-> WLAN-1 port of router using ethernet cable.
Laptop connects to <-> WLAN-2 port of router using Ethernet cable.
Desktop connects to router by wire to the WLAN-3 PORT using ethernet cable
Issue: Both Laptop & Desktop get internet access but I end up connecting laptop through ethernet cable although wireless adapter is present in it.

Also, in none of the above cases I'm able access DESKTOP from LAPTOP or viceversa.

Please let me know the solution. Note that wireless router has default factory settings. Is it something do with ethernet cable that I am using... use straight or cross cables?

Actually, I want to see the shared folders. I'm familiar with sharing process. However, the machine itself is not found in the network.
Can you tell me the solution for the internet issue?

Do you need to see the desktop or just share folders from each other? If the latter then you need to do the following:

Use Windows Explorer and select a folder you want to share. Right click and select sharing and security.

On the sharing tab click on Share this folder. Enter a share name ( I like to enter the PC name _folder name; Rick1_Downloads)

Click on Permissions. If your ok with everyone using the PC's and Laptops having access then highlight Everyone and click on Full Control.

Do this on each PC and Laptop.

That should be it or darned near close.

The scenario you described in "A" is correct.

If you open a web browser on the desktop and enter 192.168.0.1 can you get to the admin screen for the router? The default userid is admin and the password is left blank. There is a wizard built in to the router that should get you going.

If you can't login to the router then check: Start, network connections and be sure there is a network connection defined, it's not disabled and status is connected.

Let me know how that works out.

I have two desktops and one laptop on my di-524. One desktop no longer connects. The others are fine. Is this a router or adapter problem? I tried a d-link 'stick' but after working for one day, it no...

One desktop and 1 laptop are working that means your router must be working.

1 desktop is not working. Is that wired to the router or wireless ?

If it is wired then check the light on the router, If your computer is connected to port 1 of the router then port 1 light should lit up. If the light is not lit up then check the connection.
If the light is lit up then check the IP address on the computer.

If it is wireless desktop then check the wireless connection.

DI-524 wired/wireless access point

Just for fun, make the router give out IP addresses starting at 192.168.0.101 forward. Configure the AP at 192.168.0.2 with no DHCP (the host will give out the addresses), a netmask of 255.255.255.0, and a gateway of 192.168.0.1. Now, let the laptop find DHCP, or give it a 192.168.0.x address where x is greater than 2 but less than 101.

How lucky is that?

I have standard connection-adsl to d-link dl-524 then cable to one pc, and wireless to laptop. When I use laptop, it is very slow and often freezes up My desk top has vista and lap top has windowXP. ...

Wireless is slow by its nature ... wireless operates about 10 while wire runs at 100. Wireless also less secure.

Speed up your laptop immediately by connecting it with eithernet - if you have the port to do that.

D-Link DI-524 works with desktop, but laptop can't get signal

Try opening internet explorer and typing in http://192.168.0.1 in the address box
If this doesn't work try http://192.168.1.1

For the username and password put admin for username and leave the password blank

Now look for an option for the Wireless Settings and change the channel from usually channel 11 to channel 4 your laptop may now see it. Otherwise try another, channels available in the uk are 1-12, I think it's 1 to 11 in USA

Moving desktop across room where there is no cable connection.

you can buy a cheap USB wifi adapter and connect the desktop wirelessly just like your laptop, this should do the trick.
or you can buy an access point to extend the range of the wireless network, you should not be moving the router itself this way.
