I would check out a program called "HD Tune" and go to the S.M.A.R.T Tab and check "reallocated sectors and pending." If this is happening when you write to the drive; it could be the power supply in the computer and/or ram chips. Typically, reboots only happen when power drops.

Open a command prompt, go to programs accessories and click on command prompt, type in chkdsk /f/r
then press enter
it will ask you if you want to run this next to the computer starts, say yes then restart the computer. This may take a long time when it starts, but it will fix any bad sectors on the hard drive. Once this is completed hopefully your hard drive will work more proficiently.

Intel Rapid Technology off line hard drive?

Open the computer and check cables. 0 is the 1st drive and usually the primary. Then login into BIOS and verify the drive is listed there. It must be.
Crashing may be a sign of hardware failure, but fix the HD problem 1st. Then run chkdsk c: /f/r C being the drive letter from the command prompt.

I saw the message while copying even a single file from my external USB HD i-e "the request cannot be performed because of device I/O" and "digital delyed right failed" simultaneously...

Is the error occurring when reading "from" the W.D. drive,
or is the error occurring when writing "to" your internal drive?

> digital delyed right failed

Is that the exact spelling of the error-message?

WD 500gb external HD shuts down when plugged into USB port

Try a replacement USB cable first. If that does not fix the problem, then the USB to SATA adapter board is faulty, in that case you will need to take out the internal disk to replace the external enclosure.

see
YouTube - How To: Take Apart A Western Digital My Book Enclosure

If unit is under warranty see : WD Support > Warranty Services > End User > Warranty Policy.

Note any SATA external enclosure willl work wthe same with the internal WD HD.

Installing new sata drive in HP pc

a clean xp installation does not recognize sata drives at all. you can either use nlite to build a custom install cd, press f6 during setup to load additional drivers, try to change your sata mode from native to compatible in your bios or use your restore cds.

Computer fails to recognise my external hard drive

I would suggest the external casing of the harddisk that contains its power supply is busted, so you need to change the casing or remive the harddisk from the casing and connect in inside
