The sound out of my Toshiba C55 is terrible. There is no bass and everything just sounds very tinny. Even when I put my Beats by Dre in the headphone jack, the music doesn't sound good. I'm not sure how to adjust that, or if it's just a bad laptop.
I have the Toshiba Satellite C55-A5300.
I'm not sure about before the update,
but after the windows 8.1 update my audio was pretty bad and had no bass
at all.
In Control Panel ---> Hardware and Sound I found "Realtek HD Audio Manager" which has a tab named "DTS"
Once I hit the Launch buton I was able to apply settings for headphones and external speakers including bass boost.
My audio is now much better.
Hope this helps.

This worked for me but only temporarily. The problem would pop back up if I closed whatever program(s) was using audio and then restarting it/them. This combined with the other solution mentioning ctrl panel / dts / bass boost, fixed the problem for good.

For a lot of these Toshibas with Realtek drivers, you have to go into Control Panel, Sounds, and turn on something called DTS. Otherwise, no bass.
Go to Start, control panel and choose sound tab (icon). Once you get it, set up as you need. Test. Good Luck

headphone jack maybe damaged from wrong insertion of some material,, try to insert headphone very slowly until sound will transfer to headphone..
SOURCE: Why our head phones on Computer are not working
Is there a switch to turn on the headphone port? Is there a control on the headphones to adjust the volume (on a volume level on the side of the laptop)? Also, when the headphones are plugged into the laptop, go into your sound settings and turn up the master volume (and wave volume if it is low.. If that works, make sure to turn it back down when disconnecting the headphones).
Also, do the headphones work in another device (stereo, etc..)?

I think you are on the right track, if the headphone jack is worn and shorting out itll kill the speakers because it thinks headphones are plgged in, ebay would be a good start for parts, maybe even call toshiba and speak to their tech support.

Hi,
You can try a system restore, ie you can take back your computer to a date when it was working fine .
Running system restore in windows Xp:
Start >All Programs> Accessories >System Tools >System restore
Running system restore in Vista
Start> write "system restore in start search bar "> click system restore
If the system restore doesnot work , try uinstalling the sound drivers from the add remove programs and install the new ones from the link below

Check your sound device levels. you may need to enable that headphone port before it is usable. you can do this in the control panel tab. reinstalling your sound drivers wouldn't hurt also.
