Canon SD30 I just recieved my brand new CanonSD30 in the mail, it says that i need to charge the battery on the charger for 90 minutes and the light will be orange until it is fully charged and should be taken off the charger immediately when the light turns green. This has not happened, the camera will not turn on and it will only turn on when it is on the charger though it will not take pcitures even with a memory card in. I am getting very frustrated. Yes the can go bad.
I still have 9 year old Kodak lithium batteries in good condition, nut I know sometimes my rechargeable batteries last no longer then a year. It is a shame that some camera brands only give a 90 day warranty on the batteries.
To keep your rechargeable batteries in a good condition, give them a charge at least every 3 months. Or always a day before you need the camera. Never try to use speed chargers. I still have a charger capable of charging full within 15 minutes. The barrettes are hot, and when charged that way after 10 or 20 times they are dead.
Just use the charger that came with your camera.
But if you only can shoot a few shote with your battery, buy a new battery.

1. Remove the battery from the camera
2. Remove the Memory chip
3. leave the camera for an Hour
4. After which you can install the battery only first
5. Recharge the camera first
6. Later when the camera is charged the battery
7. Install the chip if available

Thank you for such a detailed description, wishing others would take your lead. To the problem camera designated batteries (other then AA rechargeable) have always been a bit of a sore spot for me because the user is compelled to purchase a specific battery. As much as I prefer the name brand accessories for the camera there come a point where you just gotta venture forth with third party accessories. There is nothing wrong with using an "off" brand in fact what I've found is that is some cases they are a better battery. Again back to the problem. I grasping thoughts on how to word this but, here goes. As much as the manufactures would like you to believe that these batteries do not form a memory they do. Also the battery can trick you into thinking it's fully charged when in fact even though the charge light is saying completed it's only got about 1/3 charge. I've worked with Canon's BP 511 and now the "new" BP 511A for many years The BP511A or equivalent is the better battery. What needs to be done is to drain those batteries down until they stop, let it cool don't take it from the camera to the charger. Time the battery when you put it on the charger, meaning not to the second but what you would "normally" do is plug the battery into the charger and leave it right. Well what's possibly happening is that within ten minute the ready light is coming on, (something stupid going on in the battery) So check the battery stat of charge after say 15 minutes and if it says it ready (drum roll please) remove the battery unplug the charger for a few seconds and place the battery charger back onto the wall outlet and plug the battery back into the charger and look at your watch again. I've had to do this as much as three times until the thing would get the idea it was to take a charge "normally" about 2 hours will bring it back up. There is no device I've found to completely drain one of these batteries so over a period of time in your case one year the batteries begin this fit. I've since replaced the BP511 for the better BP511A's or equivalent. I'm not pointing a finger because myself and staff do the same thing and pull the battery before going to a shoot if it's showing partial discharge and the thing gets put onto charge and we start this cycle all over again. Be careful of the charger as well meaning don't just disconnect the battery and put it back on charge when it's going the cycle thing disconnect the charger from its power source as well because it holds a memory for a few seconds and will just shut off in a few moments if you don't.

I got hold of Canon support. I had the same problem. Got a new battery, fully charged and would not run the unit. Canon told me to do a system reset. pull out main battery and aux battery (bottom of unit) and to power switch to aux for 90 seconds. the put batteries back and it should work. Hope this helps.

If you persistently leave the batteries discharged, it is unlikely that they will be able to hold a full charge. You should re-charge your batteries at least once a month, even if unused. Put it on your calendar. BTW 2 years old is hardly 'brand new'.

On a Motorola charger, when the battery is charging the light should be a constant red (or amber depending on the charger). When the charge cycle is complete the light will change to solid green. Sometimes the solid green time is brief, as the battery will begin to lose charge, and the charger will go back into trickle mode and change once again to red (or amber). In most cases, a flashing light indicates a problem, such as a bad or shorted battery, an incorrectly seated battery, dirty battery contacts, or a bad connection with the battery. (Note: Batteries last 18-24 months typically. Check your date code for the age of the battery.)

There were several chargers made for the GP360, including but not limited to a 60-minute charger, a 90-minute charger, a 10-hour trickle charger and a 6-unit gang charger which would be a rapid rate, either 60- or 90- minute. If you would supply your charger's model number we could tell you which one you have.

When you insert the battery , plug the power into the charger and the light turns ON (red or green) - the charger is OK. One indication that the battery is dead is when you charge it, after just a few minutes the full charge indicator will turn ON ( with Canon chargers the light for full charge is green). If that's the case, purchasing a new battery is the only option.

Your battery is only meant to last a year or two. When they go bad, the charger will show them as charged, but as you've discovered, this charge doesn't last very long. If an old battery, it's time to consider a new battery. Generic NB-4L's are relatively inexpensive. Here's some from Amazon:
