1998 jaguar jx8 isn't going into first gear easily...have to rev it to go in, I have been using gears the original owner didn't...mountain driving and all. HELP

It look like the transmission input shaft still turning while clutch pedal is press. the clutch does not disengage enough. now engine off try to put in first gear then press clutch pedal start engine

checking gear oil is not checking for a bad gear or bearing with the hub that will also pop the abs change the hub because if grinding is indeed the hub not long from total failure which can cause accident as well as serious injuries

Gear usage.
The Drive is for normal driving.
D2 is for hill/steep climbing drive.
D3 is for hill/steep going down drive.
If you have overdrive button, use it when you exceed 60mph.
That's all you have to do when you see roads that is going up nor down.
Standard or Automatic ???
Standard: the clutch is slipping, Automatic: the clutches internal are slipping, did you bother to check the transmission fluid level first ?????
sounds like servo/solenoid problems for those gears run the fault codes or have it inspected and properly diagnosed by an accredited transmission specialist shop
it is running with no reported noises or other problems so at this point it will not need a new transmission
