Whirlpool Dryer GEQ9858J autodry problem

I would check the the vent hose first. It might be clogged with lint or stopped up some other way or even crimped where the air won't flow. Turn on the dryer and go outside and be sure there is a good flow of air coming out of the vent. If there's not much air flow dis connect the hose and clean it out

Dryers have 2 basic types: AUTODRY and Electronic. The electronic moisture control relies on 2 bars inside the dryer. As wet clothes rub these bars the wetness discharges the capacitor on the moisture control board. As long as the cap don't get a full charge the timer motor will not advance forward to the end of cycle. What goes wrong on these? Wax buildup on moisture bars form a barrier that keeps wetness off them bars. The control thinks them clothes is dry and shuts her down. On autodry the timer motor advances very slowly, The motor does not work while the heating element is on. Only when the heating element is off does the timer motor advance. As them clothes gets dryer the temp inside the dryer stays warmer and therefore the dryer thermostat keeps the heater off long and the timer motor advances. Like being on a highway with traffic jam you go a little bit then stop then go a little bit more then stop. Finally you get there. So what goes wrong? The control thermostat is not functioning properly causing the heater limit to do all the work . Instead the heater limit has to do the work and it ain't a real happy camper. Makes them clothes get too hot. They come out wrinkled.

Below it is the control T-stat. Now when that filter housing is clogged
The temps rise considerably faster. This control turns the heating element on and off during the drying session. So if you have this:

The autodry feature is not gonna work so good. Why?


See that orange wire attached to the high limit thermostat?
That feeds power to the timer motor if the heater element is not on.
Bad control thermostat AND/OR air restrictions are the Autodry type dryer's worst enemy.
Try first cleaning the dryer and see if that makes a difference.
If it still has problems then change out the control thermostat.

Their are 2 types of dryers. Electronic dryness sensing style and Autodry style. Yours is Autodry.
Electronic dryers have a dryness board which relies on info from moisture sensing bars that the wet clothes rub against. AutoDry models like yours alternates the power between the heating element and the timer motor. This is what you heating assembly looks like:


Check all the components on the heating assembly for continuity.

if it works on auto but not on time you have a bad timer,it's not counting down,it's better to use auto anyway,when the clothes dry the dryer shuts off on it's own,this way your not using extra electricity,if your clothes dry in 30 minutes and it's on 60 minutes it will still run after the clothes are dry on auto it doesn't.if you open the door and look around the opening you'll see a tag with the model number,your missing a couple of letters on the model number.

You are correct, there's a problem with the moisture sensor if the dryer is heating but keeps drying when set to Auto-Dry. Either the sensor bars are shorted/touching each other or it is covered with thin film. Disconnect power then check the sensor bars for short circuit and clean thoroughly. Please indicate the exact model number of the dryer should you need further help.

when on autodry, timer is not used, but a moisture sensor in the machine monitors the moisture lever in the clothes and shuts off machine when dry. no problem.

hi thanks for the question ther is a thermostat on the air duct at the back of the dryer it has 2 wires at ends and 2 wires in the middle smaller ones this thermostat opens to turn off heat and the small wires on this thermostat when the heats shuts off then power goes to the timer and not before if it shuts off on timed dry timer is ok i would vacuum the dryer make sure all the vent right to the outside is clean as air flow restriction can cause this problem thanks the appliance doc

you need to replace a t-stat. one of your t-stats are blown. im drawing a blank but its the one with four terminals on it
