Well Adam,
was the environment already noisy?
Well but there is a program (Nero Wave Editor) which can help.
On the interface, click ENHANCEMENTS on the top and then select NOISE REDUCTION and it will present you with some other interface with sliders and then you move then more to the right.
You cannot remove the background noise of already recorded material unless you have special software for that purpose. It is available, but costly. To eliminate some background noise, you may in the future, try to muffle the microphone by turning down the volume and recording by moving the device closer to the sound sources. Some folks put a wind sock over the recorder, as you may have noticed during TV News recordings on street events or at a studio. Try a wool or thick sock over the recorder and see if that helps.
I wish people would pay attention he said MACBOOK not VISTA. I too have the same issue where I connect the cable and it says waiting but nothing happens.
when the recorder is plugged into the pc, it will flash pc and be powered by the pc... but when the recorder is not plugged in, then the batteries are needed to power on

My VN-960 wouldn't recognize because windows didn't have a driver for it.
With the Install CD still in the drive, Go to the control panel, New Hardware, then wait for it to finish searching. Click on My Hardware is connected, then choos the Digital Wave Recorder, and then find driver. It should install the driver and Work now!
