Acer aspire 5742 nothing works, black screen, power button flashes blue on-off on-off, when battery is fitted light at bottom of laptop is orange not blue, none of the f buttons respond, think it needs bios sorted but how.

Thanks for using FixYa. You will need to reset the Laptop if it is not starting up. Follow the procedure as under to reset it---

Remove all connections to and from the laptop. Now remove the battery and press and hold the power on button for 2 minutes. Release the power on button. Slip in the battery pack. Plug in the power to the laptop and to the wall. Please do not plug in any other devices and now try the Laptop powering it on to resolve the issue.

Most likely your battery is dead.
If you are worried about your HD , the best thing to do would be to power it off.
Remove the battery and see if it will boot on the AC adapter.
If it boots , just get a new battery.
If not you have a motherboard issue and need to call Acer if it is under warranty.

The power button may not work, that is most common in laptops, or you have a short.
