I got the "smart" warning for hard disk failure. I replaced the hard drive with and equivalent (same capacity later mode of the original drive) but cannot now get the unit to power up. The LED on the poer supply cord is lit, the battery light adjacent to the power button flashes, and the power button lights for the duration you press it - but nothing happens. Any ideas? Is there a rest I am missing? Thanks.
Check to ensure that the new drive is properly seated in the drive caddy. Pull the drive completely out of the system and reboot. If your system starts then you know you have isolated the prblem to the new hard drive.
Try removing the battery and unplugging the power cord. Plug in the power cord without the battery. This will reset the power logic.
If you changed nothing apart from the hard drive I would remove it and then try restarting the laptop. If you get an OS not found message then check the pins on the hard drive (and caddy if there is one).
SMART is used to measure your HDD health. It warns you of impending failure of your hard drive. If it goes down, it's a good idea to backup important stuff and prepare to replace the HDD.
S.M.A.R.T is an acronym for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology systems (SMART) and it's usually built in to most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks.
