Fax machine rang but did not answer

I have the HP4215 all-in-one printer and have misplaced my instruction manual. After connecting to the phone line to receive a fax, the machine rang but did not answer. What button should I hit or is there there a way to set it to automatically answer?
Hopefully I've explained this clearly. Thank you for your assistance.

Yes you cAN

go to setup on your printer

If you wish to receive faxes automatically, verify that automatic answering is enabled on models that have an Auto Answer button, or that the Rings to Answer setting is set to a number equal to or larger than one for models that do not have an Auto Answer button. On models with an Answer Mode setting, it should be set to Fax, FaxTel, or AnswerMachine depending on your setup.

How do you get the fax machine to work?

First, make sure that the printer is connected to an active phone line. The best setup would be to connect the printer straight to a wall jack and the other end of the phone cable should be connected to the line port at the back of the printer.

For receiving faxes, check the fax settings > Ringing and Answering. Check if the Auto Answer is enabled and check how many rings the fax will pick up any faxes sent to your number. If you have an answering machine connected to the same line, set the printer to pick up 3 rings higher than your answering machine. If you have a voicemail service, you'll need to get a distinctive ring feature from your phone provider.

Line in use

Hi there, the fax machine on your all-in-one printer is really handy when it works properly. Getting your fax capability back requires a troubleshootingmag-glass_10x10.gif process that moves through the possible causes of a problem and arrives at a solution. Follow these steps to troubleshoot the fax machine on an all-in-one printer.

  • Plug the power cords in, push the power buttons on and get everything up and running. Sounds simple, but lack of power is the culprit quite often.
  • Step 2.Check for a phone connection in the correct input jack. Some printers with fax capability have more than one phone jack so you can hook up an answering machine or another phone "downstream" from the printer. Consult your instruction manual to determine the right connection for your printer.
  • Step 3.Swap out the all-in-one printer for a working phone to find out if the problem is in the phone line coming from the wall. Once you hook up the phone, you should get a dial tone if the line is working. Remember to reconnect the all-in-one printer after you're done.

CAN NOT GET FAXES? I DO HAVE DIAL TONE IT IS ON

Here are some things you can try, hopefully one will help.
    1. Check for a phone connection in the correct input jack. Some printers with fax capability have more than one phone jack so you can hook up an answering machine or another phone “downstream” from the printer. Consult your instruction manual to determine the right connection for your printer.
    2. Ensure that you are running on an analog line. IP phones can not run most Faxes, even if you get a dial tone. Also in a corperate setting ensure that you are not on a digital line.
    3. If an answering machine is connected to the same line, fax reception problems can occur. These problems may be corrected by changing settings or phone line connections. If you have other faxes on the same line as this one, ensure that the "Rings to Answer" setting is set to a number equal to or larger than one for models that do not have an Auto Answer button. Same goes for your answering machines. On models with an Answer Mode setting, it should be set to Fax, FaxTel, or AnswerMachine depending on your setup.

I can send faxes, but not receive them on Canon Pixma mx310

Do you have the phone you are answering with connected through the fax machine? If you have the machine set in 'tel priority' mode, the machine will not begin receiving a fax until you press 'FAX' and the 'color' or 'black' button. Alternatively, if you have your phone connected to the 'telephone' jack on the machine (next to the 'L' jack), you can press '2' and '5' on the telephone keypad to turn the machine on in fax receive mode.
