Precor M9.21 Treadmill - Stops under load

I'm having problems with Precor M9.21 Treadmill, the machine will work fine without being stood on (no load) but as soon as you set foot on it will produce a screech type noise and will not rotate. It will simply stop spinning when stepped on.

Apparently there was a new motor fitted just before i bought it. Do you think it may require a new motor?

  • Anonymous May 01, 2009

    Thanks.

I have also found that even when the treadmill is turned off and i manually move the belt round is still makes the same screech noise. Its like the gearing is not working right.

This probably did not happened suddenly right? the problem is not the motor however you can easily check the blue capacitor for peace of mind. with the power disconnected, disconnect one side off the capacitor from the top. with a ohm meter put the 2 probes on the cap,you will ear a temporary beep sound from your meter, then reverse your probes on the capacitor and again a temporary sound that mean your capacitor is good and your motor will run OK.

Your problem is more then likely your run belt and bed assembly. When new, these are coated with a wax of some kind for slipping, has you use the machine wax wears off, and so is the belt. You can see a black rubber dust at the rear of the machine. And so resistance increase when pressure is applied on the running belt.

Just behind the on/off switch where the power cord goes in, there is a auto reset 15 amp breaker that trips when too must resistance against the motor increase the amperage over 15amps. At 7 min/m on your speed setting and if the belt is adjusted correctly with nobody on, the motor pull about 6amps, with someone like me 180lbs, the motor pulls an avg of 10amps with a new belt.

If you have a clamp amp meter you can test it yourself.

2 parts you will need to fix this; 50985-101 (bed assembly) and 36355-101 (run belt 17 X 110) This is real easy to install.

make sure these parts are for your machine model # as they did increased the width of their belt over the years

Since 1998 I had to replace these parts 2 times with an average of 3 people using the treadmill every day. This is a good machine and if everything else is good it's worth it. I paid $300 for these parts, i'm sure if you shoppe a little you can do better.

Have a good one

No, I think the deck may not be lube and i want to know when you stand on it does sound like the motor is spinning and the belt is just not moving?? Take off the lid to see. Next you may need a new lower board, this treadmill should be on a 20 amp single circuit. check thopse things first and please rate me great

I recently bought a used Precor 954i it worked fine then when i brought it home and wired it in with a 20amp breaker and 240 volt im getting error 29 as soon as i turn the machine on any ideas?

Precor Error 29, Excessive AC Input Current Probable Cause 1. The running belt and/or deck are badly worn.
2. Bad lower PCA.
3. Drive motor is shorted or de-magnetized causing a high power demand.
Corrective Action
  1. Check the amp draw using a clamp on AC volt-amp meter during loaded and no load conditions and compare values to a similar treadmill that is known to have a good running belt and deck. Replace the belt and/or deck if necessary. Don't forget, some units have a double sided deck which means it may be flipped over rather than replaced if it has an unused side.
  2. Test unit with a known good lower PCA. Replace lower PCA if necessary.
  3. Test unit with a known good drive motor. Replace drive motor if necessary.

Precor Treadmill C956 error 21

Precor Error Code 21 Error Code: 21 Manufacturer: Precor
Model: All Models
Error Description: Error 21, Too many Consecutive Power Requests- The error 21 observes a treadmill's power bit reading when the treadmill was operating at speeds above 1 mph. Power bits indicate the relative time that the motor controller drive circuit is turned on. Power bits is an indication of the amount of power the load is demanding from the motor controller. Error 21 indicates that at a speed greater than 1 mph, an excessive amount of power is being demanded from the motor controller. Possible Reason:
  1. A badly worn deck and/or running belt can cause the error to appear when the unit is in use.
  2. Badly worn drive motor brushes may not be making proper contact with the drive motor commutator causing the error to occur when the unit is in use. The unit may also slow down or become sluggish when the load or speed is increased.
  3. A jumper may be required on the lower PCA if installed into a 120 VAC (Version 2) treadmill.
  4. A leaky or shorted drive motor filter capacitor (on units equipped with SCR motor controller) could increase the current demand enough to cause the error.
  5. A leaky or shorted drive motor inductor (on units equipped with SCR motor controller) could increase the current demand enough to cause the error.
  6. The high power demand is caused by a shorted or de-magnetized drive motor.
Recommended Action:
  1. Determine the amount of AC input current being drawn by the unit under no load and loaded conditions using a clamp on AC ammeter. The current displayed can be used to determine the condition of the deck and/or running belt. These same readings should be taken on a like unit, in good operating condition with a know good deck and running belt. The readings from the unit in good operationg condition can be used as the benchmark. Compare readings and replace* the deck and/or running belt if necessary. *Some units have a reversible deck. Be sure if the deck is being flipped or replaced, a new belt is installed on the new deck surface.*
  2. Inspect and repalce both drive motor brushes if necessary.
  3. Inspect the lower PCA (if unit is 120 VAC/ Version 2) for jumper. If jumper is not installed, error typically appears between 7 mph & 8 mph. Install jumper if necessary. CAUTION - DO NOT install jumper if unit is 240 VAC. Installing the jumper on a 240 VAC unit will casue the lower PCA to fail.
  4. Measure the AC input current without a load using a clamp on AC ammeter. Electrically isolate the filter capacitor from the drive motor circuit. The drive motor leads need be kept intact so the drive motor will operate with the filter capacitor removed from the circuit. Re-measure the no load AC input. If the AC input current is significantly lower, replace the filter capacitor.
  5. Measure the AC input current without a load using a clamp on AC ammeter. Electrically isolate the inductor from the drive motor circuit. The drive motor leads need be kept intact so the drive motor will operate with the inductor removed from the circuit. Re-measure the no load AC input. If the AC input current is significantly lower, replace the inductor.
  6. Swap the existing drive motor with a known good drive motor.

SPEED ERROR ON PRECOR 927 TREADMILL

I had the speed error on my precor 9.23. When I opened it up I found that there are two little round magnets on the belt pulley with a sensor mounted nearby. This must be how the computer know the speed of the treadmill. I noticed that there were several little metal shavings stuck to the magnets. Not sure where they came from, hopefully not another problem. However, I removed the metal shavings from the magnets and everything worked fine again. If anyone else has the speed error it might be worth a look to see if its the same problem.

Motor runs but when load is put on treadmill motor slows down substantially. Repairman tech said motor was bad. Took motor to two electric motor repair shops and they tested it (not under load) and stated...

Excessive wear on the deck and belt can cause high friction which then puts a heavier load on the motor. You may want to check the belt and deck for wear.

Treadmill works just fine for me. i am 100 pounds, my husband got on and it went out of control and he was trying to regulate it and had to get off. We have tried several times. It works for me not for...

Sounds like the unit needs to be lubricated, Its laboring under his weight thus the foot plant technology that the precor use cannot adjust properly go to Treadmill Doctor.com and you order the lubricant from their.
