I HAVE A 5 CU. FT. FREEZER AND IT NEEDS FREON. I DONT SEE A FITTING TO INSTALL THE FREON WERE AND HOW DO I PUT THE FREON IN?
Hi, most chest type freezers do not come with service valves to add freon. Why, don't know but its frustrating to me as a commercial Refrigeration Contractor. If you are sure you have a leak, and you know its low on charge, check the data plate to see what freon it takes. Most older models have R-12. Some are 134-A, and I have had some that are R-404A. If your lucky, it will be the 134-A that you can buy at any auto store. When I come across a unit like this, I have what is called a bullet piercing valve or saddle valve that is attached to the suction line of the unit. It is a 2-piece valve that has adapters to fit lines from 1/4" to 3/8" lines. You can find ones for larger lines. They are held on with 3- Allen head screws tightened down evenly so they don't leak when you pierce it. It has a 1/4 " fitting for a service tech's manifold gauges. Your problem would be if it is 134-a, is the hose kit will not fit the valve, as they are made to fit a auto fitting. I know they sell adapters at refrigeration parts houses to convert these to fit, but you need to be a contractor. If you have a Grangers any where near you, this will be your best bet to get both the saddle valves, and the adapter you will need. If you had any way to get a regular service manifold set, that would be a plus. I know this will be your hold up, that and freon if its not the 134-a. Anyway, thats how its done by installing a bullet piercing valve. Once its clamped on the line, the larger of the 2 coming off the compressor, there is a set screw in the center of valve. With hose attached, screw the set screw down to pierce the can. Now, once it is down, it will not flow until you turn the set screw back the other way. When you know you have enough, turn it back to shut it off. Remove the hose and put the supplied cap on the valve. Thats how its done. I wish you the best of luck.
