Ok the problem is all xbox 360 motherboards come with preset keys like a password everyone is different. your origanal samsung dvd drive also has the key programed into its sst chip on the pcb (Printed Circut Board) which allows it to work with that motherboard (another way of explaning this is it works the same way as a wireless network anyone can connect to it but you must input the correct password to be able to connect and use the internet)

There is a solution you need to extract the dvd key out of your old dvd drive and inject it into your new one. To do this you will need a few tools
Xbox opening Kit V2

CK3 Pro Connectivaty Kit

Via Sata Pci Card

Jungle Flasher Software.

I Repair xbox 360's and have repaired 100's please visit my web site at the address below you can find all the software, hardware and guides needed also if you view the guide it shows you how to flash your dvd drive to enable you to play backed up games.

Wont read games only reads dvds

This is going to be a bit long -- but very detailed, so please read it carefully. There are several reasons that an xbox 360 system will have problem reading discs. The error messages also vary from unreadable disk, no message at all but the game skips, "please insert disc in a 360 console" to "open tray." There are a few reasons this may happen:

1.Bad disc. Check the back of your disc for scratches. If it looks good (or plays fine in another console), then the disc is probably fine. Also-- try more than 1 game to be sure.

2. Bad laser. The XBox 360 has a DVD drive very similar to a PC's DVD drive inside. The drive contains a bunch of parts including a few motors and gears and a laser. The laser is the part that actually reads the disc. The reality is...with all the hours and hours of game play, lasers do eventually wear out. The laser isn't very easy to replace, but it is replaceable. You can find any and all XBox 360 lasers at the following website:

http://store.richspsxparts.com/xb360ac.html

3.Bad DVD Drive. Sometimes other components inside of the DVD drive can become bad such as the motor that spins the disk, the motors that open the tray, etc, etc. You can get a new DVD drive to just replace everything, including the laser, in one shot but there is a catch. The XBOX 360's DVD drive is tied to the motherboard using a software lock. The easiest way to overcome this lock is to buy the exact same manufacture DVD drive that is in your system now, remove the circuit board from the old DVD drive (which contains the software key) and transfer the circuit board into the new DVD drive that you purchase. If you do this simple procedure, there is no flashing involved. The following website carries DVD drives and also provides instructions on swapping the circuit board from the old drive into the new one.

Since my xbox 360 has been repaired it won't play copied dvd's

your drive is modded with special firmware(software). What happens eventually is the laser is going out on the DVD-drive. When a DVD is burned on a computer it is not as readable as a DVD is that is produced in large factories that Microsoft use to make 360 games. So you should be able to play 360 games you buy fine and some burned games but not all of them. Replacing the laser is hard. A temporary solution would be to burn your games at a slow speed like 2.4x or even 1x.

Error msg: to play this disc put in xbox 360

Hi,

the Laser In The DVD Drives Failed.
Try a CD/DVD to see if it will read A single Layer DVD, Rather than the 360 Dual-Layer Disk.

You might try a laser head cleaning CD Disk.

Or requires drive replaced et,c. ** This is not swappable And should Be caried out by """ An Xbox 360 Drive Replacement Specialist, As the dvd drives logic board is paired to the Motherboard, And therefore have to be re-matched.

When i put my disk in and it doesnt read it, is says play dvd and then it says to play this disk put it in a xbox 360 console

This is getting quite common the reason it happens is because the sensors on the back of the DVD drive overheat and then the drive shots down to prevent damage. You can send it in to get it fixed or repair it yourself

Fixed unplayable disk error but now i get told to put disk in an xbox 360 console

Lol then no sir you did not fix it. Sorry.
"to play this disc, please put it in an Xbox360" error is caused by one of two things.
1) Dead/Dying laser- Replace it or try to adjust the variable resistor on the laser lens. (USE a micrometer on the 20k setting and a 1.8mm flathead)
2) Incorrect drive key- If you "fixed" your initial problem by buying a new dvd drive, and putting it into the console. You no longer have the correct dvd key to match the Xbox360 motherboard. IF both drives are the same brand. You can simply remove the green pcb from the old drive and put it into the new drive. (be CAREFUL with the ribbons!!) If you did purchase a new drive, and already threw away the old drive, you're screwed the Xbox will NEVER play a game again, unless you download it from Xbox Live.

Disk reading error

Hi,

this is a possible laser read problem.
Try an official DVD Movie. And also a music CD.
if it reads nothing at all, i,d suggest a laser head cleaner.
Or a replacement DVD Drive.

Pick up in the DVD is bad or weak and will need replacing.

Put this in an xbox 360 console

Did you try using a cd lens cleaner in the XBox 360 dvd drive? Check the cds that they are not scratched, and you could have your son try the discs in another XBox 360.
