Turns itself off within 2 seconds of being started
Last night,my 1995 V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd's battery caught on fire while sitting, the engine was not on. We replaced the battery, and when you turn the key,it turns right on,but turns itself off within 1-2 seconds after starting. Everyone thinks its the alarm system protecting against theft. We do not have the owners manual,we bought it used.
How do we get it to stay on??? The drivers door is usually what resets the alarm system, unfortunately, that door was replaced by the previous owner,so it does not apply for our situation-we need to find another way to reset the alarm.
Re: Turns itself off within 2 seconds of being started
Lock all doors and open with key in passenger side door. Then start it..That should reset the security system>>>Hope this helps you and have a great day...

Your Jeep has what's known as the delayed start, no check engine light problem. The Jeep will not start until the check engine light comes on, on the dashboard. Next time it cranks but will not start, look at the dashboard to see if the check engine light is illuminated. If it's not lit up, then your Jeep does have that problem and your Jeep ecu is in need of repair or replacement. There are components inside the ecu that are going bad and will continue to get worse, eventually leading to a permanent no start condition. There are ecu repair services and replacement ecus on ebay.
Depend what Engine Model you have: 2001 - 2004 (WG) Grand Cherokee (International Markets) 1999 - 2004 (WJ) Grand Cherokee (All Markets) WJ engine Specifications 4.0L I-6 1-5-3-6-2-4 4.7L V8 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 4.7L V8 HO 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
For the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee: I do not know if you have the 4.0L In-Line (Straight) 6-Cylinder or the 5.2L V8; however I have included bothe below.
Alarms usually won't allow the engine to crank. If it is the alarm, arming then disarming it usually gets them to start. However, you probably aren't that lucky. Probably the most common problem for Cherokees with ignition issues is a crank sensor or a fuel pump. Listen to hear if the fuel pump runs when you turn the key to the run position (it will only run for 2 seconds, so have someone else turn the key while you listen at the gas filler neck)
Check your fuel pump ,fuel lines,.One of the most overlooked starting causes is fuel delivery. Find the
fuel rail to the injectors. Assuming you don't have a fuel pressure gauge, remove the dust cap on the fitting on the fuel rail and press
the center pin in the valve to see if there's a good amount of pressure
for a very brief second. There will be no continuous pressure unless
the engine is running or is being cranked over. Have somebody crank it
for you for a second to see if high pressure is present.
If not,
first look at the fuel cutoff switch usually located in the inside
stowage compartment of the vehicle. See if the reset button clicks when
you press it. Next check the fuel pump fuse and relay, and finally the
pump itself could be bad.
12 is a battery disconnect within the last 50 start cycles and 55 means the end of the diagnostic cycle. Basically the computer found nothing wrong. The 12 code may seem incorrect if you haven't disconnected the battery recently, but from my experience the 12 code shows up almost all the time regardless.
I did that and it didnt work. Any other suggestions?
I tried that and it didn't work. Anyone have another seggestions?
