Vertical output chip has some ring cracks on leads (cold solder joints). Set is shutting brightness off to protect5 it's crts from burning a black streak across them.

I'm not sure if this model is the one that has resistors that go bad. You can actually purchase a pack of resistors in a kit. It will come with solder, the resistors and instructions. You can lay the tv out and take the circuit board out to find the blown components, and replace the bad ones. Takes about an hour start to finish and will cost around $65.00. It has been a few years since I did this, so I'm not sure on the price.

I don't know how to fix your issue but I have the same tv with a cracked glass front. I would be interested in buying your tv for parts to replace my glass front if you are unable to fix yours. Please let me know. Thanks, Dan

My 1993 50in. hitachi ultravision has no picture but still has sound. What can be the problem? A hitachi rep. told me to see if my dvd player shows a picture but I still don't have a picture.

drcr5deep,

If your unit is truly a 1993 model I'm amazed that it still turns on at all. Usually projection units quit after about 10 to 12 years and are worn out. Judging by the age of the unit the most likely problem area is the high voltage section. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6396176-projection_tv_troubleshooting which explains how to troubleshoot this section and I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6981868-replace_circuit_board_in_modern_tvs which explains how to remove and replace a circuit board if it becomes necessary to change out the deflection board.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Lines and blurry screen

hi, sounds like u need some solder joints re-worked (probably quite a few for a set that old, but your right it`s a great set), price varies by region greatly, I`m in central florida we would charge 75 for service call & 95-125.00 for labor depending on how long it takes to do the solder rework, hope this answers your question, get it fixed it`s waaay better than the new hd (ha ha ha) sets, video-tek

Good Day;
Try resetting the TV by unplugging from the wall A/C outlet for 3 to 5 minutes, plug back in. No fix? Your TV's LAMP needs to be replaced. Part number; UX21516, for Model 55VG825.
Good Luck, big IRISH.
