91 mazda miata mx-5 cuts out around 2100-2200 RPMs. Doesn't matter if it's in gear or park. Check engine light doesn't come on so there's not any trouble codes for the on-board ECU diagnostics. Car was running fine ( though it was sitting for awhile ) untill I took it for a smog test. The air bag warning light does come on and flashes 4 times- pause -4 times, etc. Cant find or hear any vacumn leaks or worn wires/connections. Please help. My 1990 Miata that was parked for months has this same type problem where it seems to run fine until it hits about 2200 rpms and then loses power until the rpms drop back to about 2000 rpms at which time it regains power and does the same thing over and over keeping me from exceeding about 45 mph. It also doesn't want to crank or run after it gets wet when it rains which seemed to start about the same time as the power lose problem.
The very first thing to do is replace the ignition wires. These were a very common problem on Miatas. Since you're taking them off, it would be a good idea to change the plugs as well. These things are really just maintenance, but one other thing to check is the condition of the intake hose. It is critical that the hose that runs between the throttle body and the airflow meter has no cracks or flaws. Sometimes they are hard to see because the hose has creases in it. It's a good idea to take the hose off and inspect it carefully. If it is broken in anyway, the airflow meter won't know how much air is entering the engine and fuel will be cut off.
