I know this is way later...only 7 years!!. But these bikes or still around. I know because I just got one...Broke. 1. The Motor is bad... About $90 New.... 2.If it turns to Easy... The Belt could be off.
I put my belt on and #1 was hard to pedal. But did get harder with resistance increase which means the motor works! Too G??d!
Have you updated the software? Have you contacted the manufacturyouer? It may need a software update. Without knowing the make and model it is difficult to direct you for a fix. If you have a manual, look at the trouble shooting section.
Using a wrench, you remove the left pedal as you would loosen a normal, left hand threaded bolt. The right side is a reverse thread and would need to be loosened in the opposite direction.
hi laurie, your question was put in the sewing machine section, you might want to put it in another section, like bikes or exercise equipement, that you could have a better chance of getting a answer.

An Airdyne is not a coasting bike, it is direct drive. The faster you pedal the harder it gets, that is the whole idea behind the machine. It is air resistance, not like the cheapies that you buy at discount stores. It is a professional machine that a Doctor can write a program for, sports teams use them also because it is a total workout. Where did you buy it? They can give instruction on it. If you are having problems with it, take it in for service it may need an overhaul. We have sold over 3000 of them since they came out in 1981, so I do know what I am talking about, they are worth fixing.
Scanned image of the 14 page manual that came with a DP AIR GOMETER Model 14-3800B that was purchased in 1991 is available at http://sites.google.com/site/oakrunsite/
