Immediate amber light when power button is pressed. CPU fan takes off like a jet engine. None of the diagnostic LEDs light on the back.
Removed and reseated all boards, memory, cables, etc.
Also, with all cables unplugged from motherboard, same result at powerup. No diagnostic beeps, either.
Motherboard? CPU? PowerSupply? Other?
I don't want to give up on this system. Any help would be appreciated.
I have this problem with my 8400 also. After lengthly research, it appears that bad capacitors on the motherboard is the overall consensus to the cause of the problem. If you look for caps that have swelled and in some cases leaked electrolyte (a brown/tan color) you might fine your problem. You can replace the bad capacitors if you are comfortable with doing it or replace the motherboard.
You will need to change your processor is like it is bad.

Power Supply tests good. Hard drive, Opticals, CPU fan all run.
Jumpered green to black, disconnected main connector from motherboard - all devices run.
Wouldn't processor failure showup in the diagnostic LEDs?
Original Dell powersupply. Powersupply is good.
Dell uses a different pin out configuration on some power supplies. If you are using one from a different computer or a new one you bought you will have to check the moyherboard connector to see if the color order is the same.
Have you tried to swap the power supply?
