Tungsten V On last hotsync, Palm froze and could not be turned off. Battery drained. All my contacts disappeared. Recharged and now when in attempting to Hotsync I get an error message: "Unable to initiate HotSync operation because the port is in use by another application." I get this whether Palm is hooked up to my computer through the cable, or not. Previous to this after hotsyncing Palm would freeze up and I would have to reset it.
Re-arrange port configuration, install latest version of palm desktop. Right click on palmsync icon on system tray and check "Local Serial" . You may also use IrDa as alternate sync method

Palm backups are located in the following directory: C:\Program Files\Palm\username>\ED\Backup\
When you HotSync a PDA
that has undergone a hard reset, HotSync will compare the two devices. When it
sees that the PDA is empty, it will attempt to reload any backup that exists on
the PC. Once this data is reloaded, the PDA will ask to do a soft reset. This is
simply a restart of the device and doesn't affect any of the newly installed
data. This returns the PDA to working order, with all the data and programs
functioning as they were before.
you need to uninstall the version of palm desktop that you alredy have and install the 4.14 palm desktop, with the hotsync manager that 4.14 includes you should have no more problems
Step 1
Install
the Palm Tungsten software. This software is required in order to sync
Palm Tungsten with Outlook Express. To install the software, place the
CD-ROM in your PC and follow the on screen instructions.
Step 2
Use
the HotSync cable included with your Palm to plug into the USB port of
your PC. You will then plug the other end of the cable into your Palm
Tungsten.
Step 3
Open
the HotSync Manager program on your PC through the "Start" menu or
clicking on the icon. You can manage the different programs available
for synchronization through this program. Select Microsoft Outlook as
one of the applications that you want synched onto your Palm Tungsten.
Step 4
Turn
on the Palm Tungsten. You will see a star icon on the menu of your PDA.
Tap this star with your stylus to start syncing Microsoft Outlook
Express. A dialog box will appear on your PC during the process to know
the progress of the synchronization.
Step 5
Unplug
the cable from your PC and Palm Tungsten once the sync is completed. As
the Palm resets, you will now notice that Microsoft Outlook Express is
available on the PDA.
Ok, do a hard reset in you pda, in your PC, using you palm d., open you user files, export your adresses and memos; then create a new user and import all this data and do a hotsync
Older palm products and vista aren't compatible. You either needs to transfer info via bluetooth or upgrade your palm if you wish to continue using vista.
I had the same issue. I finally upgraded to the current version of Outlook. That seemed to solve the issue for me. Syncing a palm is not easy. I will never buy a Palm again.
you may want to run through a few troubleshooting tricks first try pulling out any extra USB type items that you remove and replace frequently (like a flash drive) and restart your computer after its done booting up you can try hotsyncing again. Make sure what you wanted to put on your PDA is still in the Hotsync manager box. A PDA not wanting to hotsync is a very general statement. It is an indicator for many different problems. -You may need a new hotsync cable -try a different usb port on your computer -you could open the PDA up and check if all the contacts are clean and connected (Warranty void alert) -Try re-installing the PAlm desktop software -If nothing else works put whatever application you're trying to hotsync onto a SD card and copy it from the card and onto the PDA
Tungsten Es are excellent PDAs and it doesn't have too many problems besides being too "basic". A problem like not hot syncing probably isn't an indicator of something really bad unless you've dropped it too many times. If all else fails you may need to pick up a different PDA
Last week, windoze started barking the same complaint at me.
A hard reset (of my Tungsten E) solved the problem.
Caution: A hard reset (keep the power button pressed while performing a normal reset. Only release power button, when Palm logo screen appears. The press up-key) delete ALL data (even the identity, i.e. hotsync ID) from your palm - so be sure to have a recent backup!
Right click on the HotSync icon in lower right hand side of your computer tray, uncheck Network. Your Palm is attempting to perform a Network HotSync. Only Local should have a check mark beside it.
I tried all the suggestions that were offered and gave up. But then out of pure craziness I loaded the treo 600 CD that came with my Treo 600 out of curiosity. It loaded and the MS Office 2003 conduits loaded nicely and the problem appears to be solved for now.
So I tested and it the Tungsten E Hotsync's feature all appear to be okay. I'm not sure if this is the best solution but it solved a very frustrating problem.
The version of Hotsync that loaded is 4.1.0.
