Most compressor motors are brushless. I suspect your problem is due to a bad capacitor or capacitors. The capacitors on a motor are under the one or two humps on the motor casing. Large motors usually have a run/start capacitor or run and a start capacitor. If the motor tries to move or moans when you turn it on 90% of the time it the capacitor.

Remove the capacitors and bring them to your local electric motor repair shop. They usually will test them for free and usually have replacement capacitors on hand. When reinstalling if it has two terminals it does not matter which wire you connect to which side. Many time each terminal will have two connection points. Sometimes they have two wires on one side and one on the other. Just make sure you keep the same two on the same side. Also the start capacitor may have a diode/resistor on it. Have the motor shop check it and if good swap it to the new capacitor or install a new one.

Motor hums but won't kick in

Hi simpsonruth1..
In the back of the compressor motor you will see a fan, remove the plastic cover to get to it..
Once you have the plastic cover removed and the fan exposed, plug the compressor in and spin the fan with your fingers...be quick as the fan could cut your fingers if you do not get them out of the way..
If the compressor starts working, then the start capacitor is bad on the compressor...if it does not run then you have motor troubles, either replace the motor or get it rewound.

HAS POWER , BUT SEEMS TO BE LOCKED UP. The sound that it makes is a hum and no air in or out

The electric motor may have seized up from moisture or contamination. Make sure all air has been released by opening a valve or fitting.Disconnect the compressor from its power source, (Tape the power cord plug to compressor handle for extra safety) Remove motor cover, try to rotate the motor with a screw driver using just a little pressure. If the motor has brushes, make sure they are in contact and do not need replacement. Check to see if the motor has lubrication points. If so us a little WD40 or other oil based product.Place cover back on motor. Plug unit in to power source. If the unit still 'hums' turn switch off. I believe this compressor is oil less.If so the motor and compressor may be connected as a unit.If the compressor itself is froze up you may be able to separate the two and try freeing any frozen parts, again making sure the unit is disconnected. If the compressor does not respond to the suggestions given consider replacement if out of warranty.Good luck!

3 Gal, Craftsman Air Compressor. Builds pressure to about 20 psi, no further. While it was running, it bogged down and sounded different. I felt around the entire compressor for any leak, but only found...

It sounds to me like the motor is shot, Bogging down at 20psi makes me suspect the brushes are gone. No good contact on the brushes or even just a bad connection of the power cord will cause it to heat up and lose power under load. Check for worn or lose power connection first, then see if the motor brushes are replaceable. The brushes would be under a screw type cap on the motor with a spring holding the actual brush in contact. You will have more than one so give it good look over.

Model ffu213caw1: my freezer stopped cooling recently.there is power to the uniti hear a small click down near the compressor like it is trying to start and then it stops.compressor is warm to the touch...

Compressor is bad the clicking noise is the Start Relay/Overload is kicking on and off. compressor is warm because it's trying to start but can't Frigidaire is known for bad compressors. I don't think the Start Relay/Overload is bad because the compressor gets warm.

Need to replace the alternator on my 1998 aurora w/ 4.0 northstar engine. any exploded view diagrams or diagrams period available?

Hey man, it's not too bad. Discharge the A/C. Take out compressor, take out bracket, take out alternator. There will be 2 bolts on the top of the alternator which are kinda hard to get to. Then there are two bolts on the in side of the compressor and I believe 4 total on the front. Google an electric motor repair place in your area!!! I get mine rebuilt for $50 vs $300 form a parts store. Or, get a brush kit. I believe on those you don't even have to take the alternator apart, only the black cover on the back. There you go, $12 you did it yourself.

Motor starts and stops at short intervels with large amounts of spark on one side of brushes.

your brushes are worn out and have probably ruined the stator commutator rings, you can try new brushes, but i believe its too late

Contact points on compreessor motor are sticking closed and unit (compressor) does not kick on. No breakers are kicked, when I cycle them the contacts keep locking closed and compressor remains off.

Contacts are bad need new contactor. This happens often, Check out very carefully to see why contacts are going bad. May need new capacitor.
If you have voltmeter check the compressor side of the contactor to see if you have voltage. Rus
