How to configure a L2TP over Ipsec CLIENT on a Netdefend router? The L2tp/Ipsec SERVER is documented, as well as the L2PT and Ipsec CLIENTS separately. The question is how to combine them into an L2TP over Ipsec client.

SOURCE: Nortel Contivity VPN client?

Nortel Contivity will work with the your D-Link router, however its functionality depends on the authentication type (AH will not work), NAT compatibilty mode, and disabling keep alives on the server. Contact your Network Administrator to find out how your VPN is configured. Step 1 Verify that you are using the latest version of firmware on your router. Step 2 Login to the Web Management for your router by entering its IP address (192.168.0.1) in your web browser. The default username is admin, and the password is blank. Step 3 Click the Advanced Tab to access the Virtual Server Settings. There is a list of pre-defined Virtual Server Rules towards the bottom of the page. Find the IPSec Rule. Click the pen and paper icon to edit its settings. Enable the rule, enter the IP address of the computer attempting to connect to the VPN in the Private IP field, then Apply the changes. Step 4 Create a new Virtual Server entry. Name the Virtual Server, "NortelVPN". Enter the IP address of the computer attempting to connect to the VPN in the Private IP field. For the Protocol Type, select Both. Enter 9550 for both the Public and Private Ports. Set the Schedule to always, then Apply the settings. Step 5 Access the Tools Page, then click the Misc button. Disable IPSec Pass-through, then click Apply. If the VPN Server is properly configured to work with clients behind NAT routers you should be able to connect to the VPN.

I have had many D-Link routers fail ova the years and they all seem to start off just as ya describe , then go toes up... after a bit. Of course B4 getting another unit, one must first re-install all drivers, check all cords, cables etc. just to rule out anything else. Then get a nice new modern one :)

SOURCE: Router Configuration in "Wireless Client" Mode

Hi, If I understand you right, what you want to do is to make the DI-524 as a repeater, i.e. receive from the "external wireless access point" and re-broadcast to your "small home wireless LAN". Unfortunately, no. D-Link made it a point not to enable repeater mode in the DI-524 model (firmware has no support for wireless distribution service). Other than your old DWL-900AP+, one other model they have that can do this is the DWL-G710 but only in WiFi and not in the Ethernet port. On some other brands of similar feature models, the original manufacturer's firmware may be replaced with an open source firmware with more features enabled. An example is the LinkSys' WRT54G and the replacement firmwares by Sveasoft and another named DD-WRT. Hope this be of some information to you. Post back should you require additional information. Good luck and kind regards.

SOURCE: L2TP connection problem

Hello, I've had the electric cut off and immediately back on and I lost my connection from Wireless router to modem. I could not connect in the same way. I could access the router settings with wireless laptop and PC but not to internet on either. I bypassed the router and connected the PC computer to modem then to internet verifying with a browser. I then reconnected the computer cable back to router and router to modem. It stayed connected. But I'm not sure if you have a PC connected to the router also. Sometimes just unplugging some cables and replugging will solve problems. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: DLink DI-624s - can't get Cisco VPN Client to connect.

The "Virtual Server" setting is designed to give the general public access to a network resrouce (web/ftp/media server) on your internal network. If your the VPN concentrator is external to your network (meaning you'll have to use the internet to connect to it), then you won't need to define a virtual server on the DI-624.

You'll just need to enable the IPSEC and PPTP VPN Passthrough which it sounds like you've already done this. I've run into some ISP's that block VPN connections out of their network. If you have the ability, try to directly connect your laptop into your cable/DSL modem in place of your router and see if you can make a VPN connection, if not contact your ISP, if you can then verify you enabled the VPN passthroughs because your router is blocking them.

GIve it a shot and let us know your results.

I have tried to connect to my work server via vpn but get error message 800 everytime. 'Error connecting to VPN connection Connecting to .................. using ?WAN Miniport (L2TP)?.. Error 800. The...

First thing to try is making sure you have the latest firmware on the router. If you have not logged into it before you need to type http://192.168.2.1 in your browser address bar and log in when prompted. The router by default does not have a password set so it might be worth setting one in system settings. You should find on the menu an option to update the firmware. Read the screen should guide you how do this. If the firmware is up-to-date and you still have a problem try disabling your firewall on the pc to see if it's getting in the way. Don't leave the firewall off if you find it's causing the problem you just have to work out how to configure it to allow the traffic out. The route should allow this traffic out by default.

I am having problems connecting VPN Connection on my Windows 7, it says there need to be a machine certificate installed before i can connect using L2TP/IPsec. error code :766

"Error 766: A certificate could not be found. Connections that use the L2TP protocol over IPSec require the installation of a machine certificate, also known as a computer certificate."

"Error 766: The L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer could not authenticate the remote computer."

Cause: Connections that use the L2TP protocol over IPSec require the installation of a machine certificate, also known as a computer certificate. You will see this error message when such a certificate is not available.

Typically, this error is generated on a remote access server that has active L2TP ports configured, the remote access service started but there is no certificate in the computer certificate store. This generates an event log message that tells the administrator that L2TP ports will not be able to accept calls until a certificate is acquired and RRAS is restarted.
Resolutions: 1. If you use PPTP VPN, select Automatic in Type of VPN.
2. If you use L2TP, check the remote access server and make sure there is certificate in the computer certificate store.

Can't connect to AT&T VPN

I'll need to know what router you're using, make and model, for more specific help, but sometimes there is an option for IPSec passthrough. For example, on my Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G, there is a set of buttons under Security/VPN that are entitled IPSec Passthrough, PPTP Passthrough, and L2TP Passthrough. Since I don't know what router you're using, I can't tell you wether or not your router supports such functions or not, but if it does, you need to enable them.
