Hi - My husband is wondering if we need a technician to replace the rubber molding around the door of our washer or if this is something that he can do himself. Also, when I do laundry, we sometimes get a terrible smell in the house and it's only been since we've had the front load washing machines. Any ideas on what this might be? Thanks
I would follow the above steps plus mix a solution of one part bleach to three parts water and thoroughly clean the door once the rubber is removed. Install the new piece and run an empty cycle on hot. That should do the trick. Make sure when he handles the contaminated piece he wears gloves, and dispose of it outside.
Yes he can change it himself just make a note of how it comes off and then reverse the process when refitting, the black is caued by damp and residue detergent, try doing a very hoy wash occasionally this will prevent this happening, it should also cure the stale smell that you get from the machine.
First you should reach deep into the front door seal and run your fingers around. There is probably slime in there. You will need to thoroughly clean this with a bleach water mix about 50-50. You might need to pull the seal almost inside out to get in there good. If after scrubbing you still have black in the rubber the mold will come right back, in that case you will need to replace the seal. They are not to hard to replace but a little tricky. Here is a link that should help if you need to replace the seal or if the wire ring pops off when cleaning. Now if all cleans up well or you replaced it be sure to wipe out the seal after each use (deep in there) and /or leave the door open.
If the seal is clean and no mold present and it still smells then you likely have a clogged drain pump filter or pump. Here is a link that should help cleaning a drain pump or try this one for cleaning a ge drain pump filter and this one for cleaning/replacing a Kenmore drain pump
